FIA WEC

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), the founder and organiser of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, have today announced a major deal for the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC), securing another decade of growth.

The landmark agreement, which comes during a period of unprecedented growth for the championship, will ensure a common ambition to expand the partnership and drive its commercial success. It will run from the end of 2027, when the current agreement expires, to the end of 2037. 
Under the extended partnership agreement, all regulatory processes will be overseen by FIA Working Groups, the FIA Endurance Commission, and will require the final approval of the FIA World Motor Sport Council. The homologation process has also been streamlined, with the FIA and ACO overseeing the homologation of all cars competing in the Hypercar class. 
The renewed partnership will also deliver significantly increased branding for the FIA. This includes enhanced branding prominently displayed across key areas including parc fermé, the podium and the Safety Cars, as well as across broadcast coverage. 
With an expanding fanbase, a wider pool of competitors, and a global calendar of iconic events, the championship is stronger than ever. Since its inception in 2012, it has set the global standard for long-distance circuit racing. Following the introduction of the Hypercar regulations in 2021, interest in the championship from motor sport fans and from the automotive world has surged. 
FIA WEC’s trackside audience has grown 8% so far in 2026, with millions of fans following the championship globally. The fanbase for the championship is also evolving. This year, 44% of attendees are aged 34 or younger, while 40% are attending an FIA WEC event for the first time. The championship has secured the long-term loyalty of its existing fanbase, while building the next generation of endurance racing fans. 
Eight of the world’s leading auto-manufacturers currently compete in Hypercar, the top category of FIA WEC. Following the addition of the LMGT3 class in 2024, the championship now counts no fewer than 14 marques in total on the starting grid. Two more giants of the automotive industry – Ford and McLaren – are set to join the Hypercar ranks in 2027. 
For over 100 years, endurance racing has served as a proven testbed for technologies that transfer from track to road. This renewed agreement creates a solid framework for advancing hydrogen powertrains in competition, providing a clear pathway toward more sustainable transport and mobility. 
It will also deliver a more unified technical framework that defines top-level endurance racing Hypercars competing both in the FIA WEC and IMSA in North America, which will be introduced from 2030.  The new framework will provide greater cost-efficiency for manufacturers to compete in endurance racing championships and events globally, boosting potential participation and increasing the spectacle for motor sport fans. 
With interest in FIA WEC at levels never seen before, the championship is positioned for continued growth and success over the coming decade. This new deal offers the solid foundation needed to secure its future, marking a milestone moment in the history of FIA WEC. The FIA has seen a radical transformation since 2021, and earlier this year <a href="https://api.fia.com/news/fia-delivers-strongest-set-financial-results-decade">announced</a> that it had delivered its strongest set of financial results in a decade in 2025, with an operating profit of €6.7m. It also reported an exceptional gain of €20m through the Formula E contract extension.

Historic Deal Positions FIA WEC for Record Decade of Growth

The field of the 2026/7 Asian Le Mans Series includes two Ferrari 499Ps entered by AF Corse and Cetilar Racing.

The <a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/fr/actualites/asian-le-mans-series-2026-2027-une-saison-europeenne-exceptionnelle-60921" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">saison 2026/2027 de l’Asian Le Mans Series</a>, held in Europe, will comprise a Hypercar class, the top level of endurance racing. Two Italian teams have already signed up for the competition: AF Corse and Cetilar Racing. Both teams will be fielding a Ferrari 499P. Following three brilliant performances in the FIA World Endurance Championship, the Italian Hypercar is taking on a new series.

<h2>Three Ferrari works drivers</h2>

The #47 Ferrari 499P entered by Cetilar Racing can count on the technical support of AF Corse. It will be driven by Roberto Lacorte, Nicola Lacorte and Ferrari factory driver Antonio Fuoco, winner of the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans. The Italian team was second overall in the 2025/6 Asian Le Mans Series and has competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans five times, between 2017 and 2021.

Roberto Lacorte explained their intentions: “The new challenge we’re about to take on alongside Ferrari, in a top-tier category like Hypercar and in a rapidly growing championship like the Asian Le Mans Series, is a milestone in Cetilar Racing’s history. And the fact that it coincides with the 10th anniversary of our first participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which took place in June 2017, speaks volumes about how much the team has grown over this decade, gaining experience and achieving success in the world’s most important endurance championships. With the usual, invaluable support of AF Corse, we’ll be taking to the track in a marvelous and winning prototype like the Ferrari 499P, and we’re truly thrilled to be the first private team to experience this moment, driven by the same passion that has always set us apart. A beautiful, challenging, and exciting challenge awaits us: we can’t wait to take it on and share it with all our fans who have supported us for years, starting with the unveiling of the new No. 47 livery, which we’ll reveal at the end of October.”

The AF Corse #90 Ferrari 499P will be in the hands of Luís Pérez Companc, who will share with Nicklas Nielsen and Yifei Ye in turns.

Nicklas Nielsen: “I’m very happy to be racing in the Asian Le Mans Series with Luís and Yifei. We’ve been doing quite a lot of LMP2 together with Luís, so I’m looking forward to driving with him again in such a competitive championship. It’s always nice to drive the 499P, so I’m looking forward to trying a new environment”.

Asian Le Mans Series: AF Corse and Cetilar Racing field the Ferrari 499P

The inception of the FIA ​​World Endurance Championship (WEC) is certainly one of the most significant achievements in the history of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest.. From 1953 to 1992, the World Sportscar Championship served as the reigning competition, featuring highly prestigious events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Renowned carmakers such as Porsche, Ferrari, Jaguar, and Mercedes-Benz distinguished themselves across four decades before the series lost steam in the early 1990s, leaving global endurance racing without a unifying championship.

120 ans ACO

<h2>The ACO at the helm: from the ALMS to other undertakings in the 2000s</h2>

In the wake of ending that competition, the ACO worked to consolidate endurance racing and reorganise the discipline. This process began in the late 1990s with the American Le Mans Series co-founded by Don Panoz. In 1998, the American entrepreneur and owner of the Road Atlanta circuit held the first running of Petit Le Mans, a 10-hour race in the spirit of Le Mans. Panoz signed an agreement with the ACO the following year to adopt its technical regulations, officially giving rise to the American Le Mans Series. It was a win-win: teams competing in the ALMS received automatic invitations to the 24 Hours, and the ACO exported its expertise and acclaim across the Atlantic.

This momentum subsequently spread across the globe. The Le Mans Endurance Series emerged in 2004 (renamed the Le Mans Series in 2006) as the Asian Le Mans Series gradually took shape in the East during the latter part of the decade. Although contested under the ACO banner and regulations, each of these series operated independently with no genuine sporting link between the continents. The ACO had long dreamed of uniting these separate championships into a truly international competition.

<h2>The Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, a world championship first draft</h2>

It would take until 2010 for a world championship to get off the ground, namely the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC). Announced in June 2009 and confirmed in December, this cup — initially restricted to the LMP1 class — aimed to crown the best teams across multiple continents. The inaugural season, deliberately limited to three rounds (the 1000 km of Silverstone, Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta and the 1000 km of Zhuhai in China), served as a dress rehearsal for a future extended calendar. Peugeot, then the benchmark for French endurance racing with its 908, won the first two runnings back-to-back in 2010 and 2011.

The the 24 Hours of Le Mans, 12 Hours of Sebring, 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and 6 Hours of Imola were added to the 2011 season. The championship was taking shape, but motorsport's top authorities wanted more: a genuine world championship, recognised and overseen by the FIA ​​itself. The following year, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile and the ACO launched the FIA ​​World Endurance Championship (WEC) thriving to this day. The new calendar, unveiled in late 2011 during the 6 Hours of Zhuhai, featured eight rounds held across three continents ranging from the 12 Hours of Sebring to the 6 Hours of Fuji, and including, of course, the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

<h2>An electric launch — literally and figuratively</h2>

The FIA WEC restored a clear sense of direction to global endurance racing just as the carmakers competing in the top class (LMP1 at the time) were introducing a breakthrough innovation to the sport. Audi, already a fixture at Le Mans since 1999 and a 10-time winner of the race, took the bold step of making its R18 — unveiled for the 2011 season — a hybrid. This gave rise to the R18 e-tron quattro, a name shared by all the Ingolstadt-based team's cars until the marque withdrew at the end of 2016.

Peugeot, despite being the two-time defending ILMC champion and the natural favourite to challenge Audi, announced the outright cancellation of its endurance racing programme in early 2012, citing the difficult economic climate in Europe, even though a hybrid version of the 908 was already ready. The news, which broke on the very day entries for the season closed, caught the entire paddock off guard. However, Toyota — a pioneer in road-going hybrid technology with its Prius — stepped up to the challenge and entered its own TS030 Hybrid.

For the 80th edition of the 24 Hours, the ACO offered the public a race for victory featuring exclusively hybrid technology, highlighting its innovative roots. On 31 May 2012 just weeks before the race, Pierre Fillon became the eighth president in the history of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, succeeding Jean-Claude Plassart. Under Fillon's leadership, a genuine renewal of the discipline began to take shape.

<h2>The dawn of a new era</h2>

The race itself was one for the books. After putting up a relentless defense against the Audis, the Toyota TS030 Hybrids were dealt two major blows: Anthony Davidson's car went airborne following contact with a GTE-class Ferrari in a spectacular crash that left the British driver with two fractured vertebrae. The second Japanese car was also forced to retire after colliding with the Nissan DeltaWing. Audi ultimately claimed all three steps on the podium, with the R18 e-tron quattro driven by Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer, and Benoît Tréluyer finishing ahead of its sister car and an R18 Ultra powered by a conventional internal combustion engine. It was a historic victory in more ways than one, marking the very first time a hybrid prototype had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans overall.

<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/renault-alpine-vs-porsche-a-golden-age-of-turbocharged-rivalry-58330" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Harkening back to the mid-1970s</a>, Le Mans had once again become the stage for a phenomenal clash between two marques vying to establish a new technology: turbocharging in the earlier era, and electric power at the dawn of the 2010s. Since then, every win at the 24 Hours has been secured by hybrid prototypes — Audi until 2016, followed by Porsche, Toyota and more recently Ferrari with the 499P — representing an unbroken streak that, with Toyota’s success with the TR010 Hybrid in the 2026 race, brings the total number of consecutive wins for hybrid powertrains to 15. Don't forget, Formula 1 did not introduce engine hybridisation until two years later, in 2014.

<h2>A championship perpetually on the rise</h2>

Other major manufacturers were unable to resist the allure of reaching legendary status. They were determined to seize the opportunity to test their hybrid technologies becoming widespread across the world's vehicle fleets. Porsche, Nissan, and then Toyota (the latter holding the top spot at the close of the LMP1 era) followed one another in a championship that grew increasingly competitive and packed, leading up to the arrival of the Hypercar generation featuring Ferrari, Peugeot, Cadillac, BMW, Alpine, Aston Martin and Genesis.

The FIA ​​WEC now features captivating rounds for fans throughout the year: from the winding roads of the Belgian Ardennes at the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps to the unforgiving 6 Hours of Monza in Italy, as well as other iconic circuits like Imola and Fuji. In terms of both competition and innovation, the ACO and the FIA ​​have cemented a resounding success in the culmination of nearly two decades of effort, spanning from the early days of the ALMS to the establishment of a true world championship.

Next year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans will host Legends of Le Mans, a feeder series introduced by Peter Auto in partnership with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest and the FIA WEC. The supporting fixture features iconic endurance racing cars, still racing several decades after their hey day.

But Le Mans isn&rsquo;t all about the past. It is very much about making history in the present. After a promising start, Legends of Le Mans continues in 2027 with a round at the 95th 24 Hours of Le Mans, 9&ndash;13 June 2027. Vintage prototypes and GTs will be back at the circuit that made many of them famous.

<h2>History back on track</h2>

There&rsquo;s something special about seeing a race car back where it earned its laurels. Shapes, colours and sounds take us back to an era, a race, a story.

Legends of Le Mans does exactly that. It&rsquo;s not just a classic car series. The championship is a revival, a festival of iconic sports cars racing on the circuits that witnessed their glory days. Automotive heritage leaves the museum, comes back to life and up to speed.

At Le Mans, the impression of being whisked back in time is even more striking. The French round forms the core of the 2027 season. Returning to the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit is not just another calendar fixture. It&rsquo;s a proud homecoming, a return to the place where many of the cars on the grid wrote a page of automotive history.

<h2>Two generations united</h2>

Legends of Le Mans and the FIA WEC are building a bridge between past and present. On one hand, vintage prototypes and GTs demonstrate decades of innovation and racing. Meanwhile, today&rsquo;s Hypercars and LMGT3s represent the new generation of endurance race cars.

These curtain raisers are a superb opportunity for motorsport fans to gauge how far the automotive world has progressed in a short time. And for those new to the discipline, they offer a glimpse of its not-so-distant past.

In 2027, Legends of Le Mans will be a FIA WEC support fixture at circuits across Europe and around the world. After the Peter Auto Test Days at Paul Ricard in March, the championship heads to Imola in April, then Spa-Francorchamps in May and the highlight of the season &ndash; Le Mans&thinsp;&ndash;&thinsp;in June. The last round takes place in Bahrain in November, the finale of the FIA WEC season.

Keep your eyes and ears open at Le Mans next year. Every car has a detail with a story to tell. It would be a shame to leave them under dust sheets!

Legends of Le Mans, 2027 24 Hours of Le Mans support race

2023 ELMS Champions Algarve Pro Racing became the fourth different overall winner in 2026, with the Portuguese securing their first ELMS LMP2 victory in three years.

Matthias Kaiser, Jake Hughes and Ben Barnicoat stood on the top step of the podium following the Goodyear 4-hours of Silverstone. &nbsp;Heavy rain fell at the halfway point that had all the teams reevaluating their strategy and providing a thrilling final part of the race.

The no14 TDS Racing Oreca took the LMP2 Pro/Am victory from pole position, the fifth different winners in five races and Scott Huffaker taking the chequered flag in second place overall, despite an earlier incident that saw his teammate Sami Meguetounif stop at the side of the track with a technical issue.&nbsp;Pole sitter Steven Thomas joined his teammates on the top step of the class podium.&nbsp;

The LMP3 class saw the debut ELMS victory for reigning Michelin Le Mans Cup&nbsp;Champions R-ace GP, with Fabien Michal, Pierre-Alexandre Provost and Hugo Schwarze finishing ahead of the championship leading no17 CLX Motorsport Ligier, closing the gap in the championship race to just 9-points ahead of the final race of the season in Portugal next month.

There was another couple of firsts in the LMGT3 class, with Abdulla Ali Al-Khelaifi becoming the first driver from Qatar to win in the ELMS and it was also the first ELMS LMGT3 victory for Mercedes-AMG. Ralf Aron handed over to Julian Hanses, who took the chequered flag in the no62 Team Qatar by Iron Lynx Mercedes-AMG, finishing less than 3 seconds ahead of Charlie Eastwood in the no33 TF Sport Corvette, moving Team Qatar by Iron Lynx into the championship lead by just 3 points ahead of TF Sport ahead of the season finale in Portim&atilde;o.&nbsp;

All four ELMS titles are still up for grabs in the final race of the 2026 season, the 4 Hours of Portimao on Saturday 10 October.

Cyanotype is a fascinating historical photographic process that produces deep blue prints through a chemical reaction. This workshop will be led by the museum&rsquo;s educational guides.

For the Little Ones :

A coloring workshop and a dedicated educational area will be available within the museum spaces.

Activities will run continuously throughout the day.

Four rounds in, the European Le Mans Series is still wide open ahead of the next fixture, the Goodyear 4 Hours of Silverstone this coming Sunday (13 September). A shake-up remains possible in all classes, from LMP2 to LMGT3, before the final showdown in Portimão.

With two races to go, this year&rsquo;s European Le Mans Series championship is undecided. All 47 crews on the Goodyear&nbsp;4 Hours of Silverstone grid head to the famous British circuit with the intention of making their mark and earning precious points that could make all the difference in the race to the top. With small gaps separating the teams in all four classes&thinsp;&ndash;&thinsp;LMP2, LMP2 Pro/Am, LMP3 and LMGT3&thinsp;&ndash;&thinsp;round five could be decisive.

<h2>LMP2: Forestier Racing by Panis and United Autosports neck and neck</h2>

It&rsquo;s tiebreak time! Forestier Racing by Panis and United Autosports have 70 points apiece. However, the crew of the #29 Oreca&nbsp;07-Gibson, Oliver Gray, Esteban Masson and Louis Rousset have the advantage. Thanks to their wins at Barcelona and Imola, they currently stand in first place ahead of the United Autosports team, who won Le Castellet.

But the battle for the top spot involves more than two crews. The IDEC sport #18 in the hands of Jamie Chadwick, Valerio Rinicella and Laurents H&ouml;rr stands third on 52 points. After three fourth places in a row, the crew finally made the podium at Spa-Francorchamps, with the pole position point as a bonus.

Winners of the 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, Jakub Smiechowski, Nick Yelloly and Tom Dillmann come to Silverstone with plenty to say for themselves. They trail the leaders by 28 points, but will be determined to confirm their return to form. British driver Nick Yelloly will be keen to make an impression on home ground. The car was second at Silverstone last year.

<h2>LMP2 Pro/Am: who will take the upper hand?</h2>

There is no distinct favourite in this class either. Algarve Pro Racing and AF Corse tie on 61 points. The #20 Oreca of Michael Jensen, Enzo Trulli and Malthe Jakobsen ranks first thanks to the number of podiums this season. However, the AF Corse #83 driven by Fran&ccedil;ois Perrodo, Matthieu Vaxiviere and Antonio Fuoco is now a hair&rsquo;s breadth away thanks to victory at Spa-Francorchamps.

Behind them, Vector Sport and Duqueine Team have 49 points each. In other words, victory or DNF for one of the top two could completely shake up the rankings. The slightest mistake carries a high price tag.

Silverstone will also be a decisive round for AO by TF. Reigning champions, PJ Hyett, Louis Del&eacute;traz and Dane Cameron lie fifth and no doubt have their eye on a podium place. Last year at Silverstone, they missed the win by just 0.141 seconds.

<h2>LMP3: CLX Motorsport could streak ahead</h2>

The situation in LMP3 is different. On 65 points, CLX Motorsport has a 15-point lead over R-ace GP. Paul Lanch&egrave;re, Alexander Jacoby and Louis Iglesias have won the last two races and come to Silverstone in an ideal position.

All the same, they should watch their backs! At the wheel of the R-ace GP #85 Duqueine, Fabien Michal, Pierre-Alexandre Provost and Hugo Schwarz have a current score of 50. Rinaldi Racing is just behind, on 49 points, with the rest of the places to be closely fought.

At Silverstone&nbsp;CLX Motorsport has a chance to forge ahead and put a serious option on the championship win. The Swiss team will be all-out to snatch a third win to widen the gap and have some breathing space ahead of the final race in Portim&atilde;o.

<h2>LMGT3: 13 points between the top six</h2>

Anything could happen in LMGT3 this season. After four rounds, there are only 13 points between the top six crews, and 52 points still to be awarded before the end of the season.

The Proton Competition #75 Porsche Porsche&nbsp;911 GT3 R&nbsp;LMGT3 tops the tables on 53 points. Matt Kurzejewski, Thomas Sargent and Richard Lietz regained the lead at Spa-Francorchamps, but the TF Sport #33 Corvette&nbsp;Z06 LMGT3.R is not far behind.

The reigning champions will be out to shine before their home crowd. Charlie Eastwood, Blake McDonald and Alec Udell will be seeking to place the Corvette first this round. However, the TF Sport crew will have competition from Team Qatar by Iron Lynx, Proton Competition, GR Racing and Kessel Racing&thinsp;&ndash;&thinsp;all still in the running for the championship crown.

LMGT3 is the biggest class on the grid, with six constructors fielding a total of fourteen cars.

So with everything still to race for, the Goodyear 4 Hours of Silverstone could decide the season&rsquo;s outcome. Round 5 of the European Le Mans Series is not the grand finale, but it could be here that the championship is won or lost.
