Laying the foundations of M24 – the future motorsport museum

Wednesday 28 May 2025 marks a historic step for motorsport and the cultural heritage of La Sarthe. Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, and Richard Mille, key partner of the project, officially laid the foundation stone of M24, the future museum devoted to motorsport.

M24 embodies the ACO’s ambition to transform the current 24 Hours of Le Mans Museum into a global reference dedicated to motorsport history, culture and innovation.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans Museum has undergone many upgrades since it was founded in 1961. The most recent in 2023, in celebration of the 24 Hours of Le Mans Centenary, saw the permanent exhibition revamped and exceptional temporary exhibitions hosted. The M24 project, however, is on another scale. With the total surface area extended by around one-third to 8,600m², M24 will take visitors on an immersive tour through all motorsport disciplines from Formula One to Rallying to Endurance, including a trip across the Atlantic (IndyCar and CanAm).

Architect Frédéric Audevard proposes a bold, environmentally friendly design for the future museum. M24 will be built from eco-responsible materials such as aluminium and incorporate a green roof. In a nod to racing aerodynamics, visitor flows evoke the airstreams around a prototype’s body.

Driven by MACO (Musée Automobile de la Compétition), in liaison with the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, 23 mostly local firms will work on the site. Work began to a strict timeline in January 2025 with the official opening scheduled ahead of the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Pierre Fillon, President, Automobile Club de l’Ouest:  M24, the future motorsport museum, supported by the ACO and by a great enthusiast and passionate collector, Richard Mille, will be built in Le Mans. The ambitious project will encapsulate the history of motor racing and contribute greatly to the region’s cultural and economic aura. It is scheduled to open in May 2026 for the 120th anniversary of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest.

Richard Mille, key partner: Laying the M24 foundation stone is a dream come true. I have always wanted to share my love of motorsport through a museum, and this one will be the only one of its kind in the world. The project is the result of a natural collaboration with the ACO and will showcase a collection of exceptional cars – true mechanical works of art. M24, in the heart of a land of legends, will be a bucket-list experience for passionate fans all over the world.
