About the movie

Le Mans '66 is about the extraordinary personal and sporting adventure that compelled American visionary auto engineer Carroll Shelby (played by Matt Damon) to join forces with gifted British racing driver Ken Miles (played by Christian Bale) for the sole purpose of building, for Ford, a revolutionary racing car capable of ending Ferrari's reign at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 1966.

Filming

Though Le Mans '66 was filmed with the help and support of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest – who provided archives and set design elements, and collaborated in proofreading the script – it was not filmed at the 24 Hours circuit as its current configuration differs from the 1966 version. The runway of a private airport in Santa Clarita, California was transformed into a race track where the production team built three large sections of grandstands, the Ford and Ferrari garages and the international press room. For this enormous undertaking, hundreds of construction plans were drawn up based on more than 300 archival photos obtained from various sources, including the ACO.

The city of Le Mans is still highly visible in Le Mans '66, namely in scenes filmed mid-July 2018 when Christian Bale's character discovers the French city. Production designer François Audouy recalls: "We wanted to capture the moment Ken Miles arrives in Le Mans for the first time and is immersed in 1960's France. We utilised a large square in the centre of the city near the cathedral and recreated a 360° environment with hundreds of extras and vintage cars made available by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest."
