Will it be sunny skies in Mexico for the FIA WEC competitors?

With the European rounds in the bag, the competitors in the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) are crossing the Atlantic ocean for the 6 Hours of Mexico, the fifth race on the 2017 calendar for the second year in a row, but rain may just crash the party.

As Houston, one of Texas's biggest cities, currenty enduring unprecedented flooding thanks to Hurricane Harvey, is located on the other side of the state from the Mexican border, more than 1,500 kilometers separate the fourth largest city in the U.S. from the Mexican capital, so the city has not been affected by the torrential downpours. However, weather forecasts still predict rain the day of the 6 Hours of Mexico set to take place at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, the circuit of the Rodriguez brothers.

On the cusp of a promising future, Ricardo Rodriguez lost his life at the young age of 20 during a free practice session at the 1962 F1 Grand Prix held at the Mexican track, and the circuit was immediately renamed in his honor. His older brother Pedro (two Grand Prix wins) also passed away during a race weekend, in 1971 at just 31 years old, at the German Norisring, three years after his victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a Ford GT40 along with Lucien Bianchi.

Last year, for the Mexican circuit's return on the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) program, the Porsche 919 Hybrid driven by Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley (who both won at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year with Earl Bamber) and Mark Webber won the race which had figured on the sporting cars world championship calendar for three years between 1989 and 1991.

Like in 2016, the chances of seeing a Mexican reach the top step on the overall podium are extremely slim given that the only driver slated to compete on his home turf is Roberto Gonzalez, sharing the wheel of CEFC Manor TRS Racing's ORECA with Simon Trummer and Vitaly Petrov. On the other hand, the "local" driver may very well claim a spot on the podium in the LMP2 class this coming Sunday, September 3rd, shortly after 6:00 p.m. local time (Monday, September 4th at midnight in the U.K.).
