The 2018 Le Mans extrication workshop (video)

Extrication teams from all over the world head to Le Mans every year to brush up their skills. Almost 200 volunteers took part in this year’s session.

Organised jointly by the FFSA and the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, with support from the FIA, the workshop is the only one of its kind in Europe. It provides an ideal opportunity to discuss and share knowledge of extrication techniques. As driver safety out on the racetrack is a top priority for the ACO, the organisation attaches special importance to holding the workshop at the Le Mans circuit: "Le Mans is a benchmark among international race circuits and we are fortunate in that we have the support of teams who lend us cars,” explains Mathieu Navarre, chief track marshal at Le Mans. The extrication teams were able to hone their skills on cars supplied by the FFSA Academy, Toyota, Motorsport, DAMS and Onroak Automotive. “The aim is to assess extrication volunteers on an ongoing basis and keep them up to speed with changes in regulations,” says Navarre.

Teams representing more than ten nationalities attended this year’s weekend workshop. The reputed crews are now ready to serve all year round at the world’s circuits.

For the 24 Hours of Le Mans, eight teams of six experts stand by in turn, ready to spring into action in the event of an accident.
