Stories from Asia (1) - Jackie Chan DC Racing, the Chinese flag-bearer

Just two years after KCMG became the first Chinese team to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Jackie Chan DC Racing provided the kicker in 2017 by claiming a spot on the overall podium, continuing a brilliant ascension that would soon ripple throughout the entire Endurance racing discipline. Driver and co-owner David Cheng has already secured a special place in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

David Cheng is not the first Chinese driver to compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That honor went to his fellow countryman and namesake Cong Fu Cheng in 2008, with a third place finish in the LMP2 at the wheel of the Pescarolo entered by the Saulnier Racing team (subsequently re-christened OAK Racing).

In only four participations, David Cheng has emerged as one of the greatest Chinese pioneers of the 24 Hours. For his first start back in 2014, with Adderly Fong and Ho Pin Tung, he was a member of the first 100% Chinese driver line-up to make it to the checkered flag at Le Mans, resulting in seventh place in the LMP2 class (12th overall) for the Ligier JS P2-Honda entered by OAK Racing Team Asia.

In 2017, he achieved another milestone, this time as a driver and team owner. Run by the British outfit Jota Sport, his two ORECA 07-Gibsons scored two steps on the LMP2 podium. Stunningly, by finishing second and third overall, Jackie Chan DC Racing became the first Chinese team to reach the overall podium at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a first for David Cheng (third) and Ho Pin Tung (second), longtime partners at the wheel.

The current leader in the standings for the LMP2 Teams and Drivers trophies in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), Jackie Chan DC Racing has yet to announce its 2018 program, but has proved itself the Chinese flag-bearer in Endurance racing and in terms of the discipline's development in Asia represented on the continent by the Asian Le Mans Series, the season of which will kick off on Sunday, October 29th at Zuhai. David Cheng and his partner, actor Jackie Chan, intend to go still further by providing opportunities to young Chinese drivers in the Asian Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

At the same time, there is no doubt the involvement of Asian and global movie star Jackie Chan in the team will further expand the reach of Endurance on the Asian continent, especially if the film project on the 24 Hours produced by and starring the actor comes to fruition...
