Stéphane Ortelli turns 50

Today was a day to celebrate one of the 135 winners of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Stéphane Ortelli, who triumphed with Laurent Aïello and Allan McNish in 1998 at the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT1, toasted his 50th birthday today.

The photo above was taken in 2011 for Stéphane Ortelli's final participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The then 41-year-old shared the wheel of Luxury Racing's Ferrari 458 with Fred Makowiecki and Jaime Melo for his 14th start in the race.

He was only 28 when he won the 1998 24 Hours of Le Mans with Allan McNish, Laurent Aïello, an iconic marque and the legendary Porsche 911 GT1 98. The trio had never shared a car before, much less at Le Mans, and were considered underdogs to Wollek-Alzen-Müller, their teammates in the #25 sister car. Up against steep competition like Toyota, Nissan, BMW and Mercedes, the #26 Porsche finished one lap ahead of the #25.

The win was crucial in Stéphane Ortelli career. He started in single-seaters, then moved to super touring before becoming an expert in endurance racing. Ortelli represented Audi, Bentley, Pescarolo, ORECA and Aston Martin at Le Mans after the victory.

He went on to win the 24 Hours of Spa in 2003 with Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb, and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2005. An engaging driver and individual, Ortelli continues to be active, sharing his experience with young drivers and even his car with less seasoned team members! We wish him a very Happy 50th Birthday.
