Record beaten by Romain Dumas at Pikes Peak just one week after Le Mans

In the wake of his participation in the 86th running of the 24 Hours with Porsche, two-time Le Mans winner Romain Dumas won the Pikes Peak hill climb in Colorado at the wheel of the electric Volkswagen I.D. R, shattering the record set by Sébastien Loeb in 2013.

Unbelievable was the word of the day for commentators on local radio station KRDO after the finish at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (the first running of the rally race dates back to 1916). Romain Dumas destroyed the 8:13.878 record established by Sébastien Loeb in 2013 with the Peugeot 208 T16. Though the last stretch of road had been paved the year before, deplorable weather conditions in 2013 prevented competitors from improving on the time.

With a new time of 7:57.148, Romain Dumas beat the previous record by more than 16 seconds, and by nearly a minute (8:57.118) the bar set by the electric car driven by Rhys Millen in 2016, despite rushing to get the all-electric Volkswagen I.D. R ready for the hill climb.

Romain Dumas' major feat at the "race to the clouds" should provide some consolation after being forced to the retire at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last weekend at the wheel of the #94 Porsche 911 RSR shared with Timo Bernhard (one of his teammates for his win in 2010 with Audi) and Sven Müller. This evening there is no question, Romain Dumas is on cloud nine…
