Le Mans Duck Race: adopt a duck for a good cause before Scrutineering at Le Mans!

On Sunday, June 11th, the first day of Scrutineering - the administrative and technical checks for the 24 Hours of Le Mans - some 20,000 previously "adopted" plastic ducks will be released in the Sarthe river by the Lions Club Le Mans Horizon to benefit people with disabilities.

The main principal of the "duck derby" which is quite popular across the Atlantic is as simple as can be: donators purchase one or more tickets on which is noted the number of a plastic duck to be released in the river that bisects the city of Le Mans. The birds will be recovered downstream, in the order of their arrival, in a type of funnel that symbolizes the finish line. The number of the winning duck is then announced and the corresponding ticket-holder is awarded a huge prize.

The winner of the day, and proud new owner of a Fiat 500, will not be the only one taking home a prize. Many gifts, including a scooter and a trip to Crete, will also be given. The Automobile Club de l'Ouest, a sponsor of the event, will also offer up several prizes.

Each duck costs 5 euros, with all proceeds going to two charitable organizations: the Enfant du Centre de l'Arche center, which specializes in the treatment of severe neurological and motor disorders. The association is hoping to be able to purchase special bicycles so hospitalized children can get out and about; and La Souvenance, a shelter for dependent senior citizens, hoping to provide a cottage for individuals stricken with Alzheimer's disease to share private moments with their loved ones.

If you live in the Le Mans area, you can already buy your tickets at the welcome counter at the Auchan superstore, from the newspaper "Le Maine Libre," at the Tourism Office or at the Thuard bookstore. If not, then go to the website lecanarddelasarthe.com where 10,000 ducks are available for purchase.

Rendez-vous on Sunday, June 11th at 11:30 a.m. on the banks of the Sarthe river! The ducks will be released between the Yssoir bridge, in the extension of the tunnel leading to the Jacobins, and the Gambetta bridge.
