Is Fernando Alonso ready to bring his magic to the Le Mans qualifying sessions?

The Spanish driver, along with all the other competitors in the 86th 24 Hours of Le Mans, will take to the track this afternoon for free practice, followed by the first qualifying session.

The action begins this Wednesday 13 June at the Circuit des 24 Heures, set against a soundscape of humming engines, screeching tyres as the drivers hit the brakes just that little bit too late, various hissing and humming sounds, and the shrill peal of the siren in the pit lane to indicate that a car is coming in. The first free practice session starts at 16:00 today and the 60 cars competing in the race will take to the track to test their latest tweaks as they gear up for the qualifying round that begins at 22:00.
Will Fernando Alonso, driver and magician (as he demonstrated in the video we posted on Tuesday), be able to conjure up a perfect lap around the 13.626 of the Le Mans circuit? The Toyota driver answers with a smile: “No, what happens on the track has nothing to do with magic. It’s all about doing a thorough job, as a team. The practice time will help us get race-ready, and qualifying will be the opportunity for me to get acquainted with the track at night. But the priority is the 24 Hours. It’s a very long race!”

In 2017, Toyota’s Kamui Kobayashi set a new lap record at 3:14.791 (over 13.629 km) during the qualifying sessions.
