ELMS - Brief look at the 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and more

Only one round is left in the season to determine the champions in the European Le Mans Series and the teams who will earn an invitation to the next 24 Hours of Le Mans (June 16th and 17th). Here is a quick look back at what went down last weekend in the ELMS, as well as in the Michelin Le Mans Cup.

The 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps:

- First win in the LMP2 class for Graff Racing in the European Le Mans Series with the driver line-up composed of Richard Bradley, Gustavo Yacaman and James Allen (#40 ORECA 07-Gibson). The French team participated in its 12th 24 Hours of Le Mans this year, 24 (!) years after its last appearance. At the time, the same car, the #40, finished sixth in LMP2.

- This weekend marked more than one first, such as AT Racing won the LMP3 class and the Spirit of Race team won LMGTE (#51 Ferrari).

- Third pole position for DragonSpeed's #21 ORECA 07-Gibson (Nicolas Lapierre, Henrik Hedman and Ben Hanley) in 2017. The team who debuted at the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year has yet to win this season.

- Zak Brown, current executive director of McLaren Technology Group and co-founder of the United Autosport team (LMP2), was present on the starting grid at the 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.

- Below is a video breakdown from YouTube (ELMS).

Portimão :

- The final round will take place at Portimão in Portugal. No titles are secured yet and the gaps in certain classes are actually quite small. In LMP2, the duo Léo Roussel and Memo Rojas (G-Drive Racing's #22 ORECA 07-Gibson) is in the lead of the championship with 98 points, 18 more than Filipe Albuquerque, Hugo de Sadeleer and Will Owen (United Autosport's #32 Ligier JS P217-Gibson). In the LMP3 class, the #2 Ligier JS P3 of United Autosport has 85 points and Yvan Muller Racing (#18) is second with 19 points. The situation for the LMGTEs is full of suspense as only one point separates TF Sport (#90 Aston Martin Vantage) and JMW Motorsport (#66 Ferrari 488 GTE), winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in LMGTE Am. The Spirit of Race team's Ferrari (#55) is still in the race with 21 points.

- Ricardo Sanchez will drive Graff Racing's #39 ORECA 07-Gibson at Portimão (Portugal) for the finale of the European Le Mans Series season. The 2014 Nissan GT Academy winner will join forces with Enzo Guibbert and Paul Petit.

- Paul-Loup Chatin replaced Olivier Pla at the 4 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps with the IDEC Sport Racing team at the wheel of the #28 Ligier JS P217. He was familiar with the car since the 2014 ELMS champion had already driven it at Test Day for the 24 Hours of Le Mans prior to serving as a consultant for Eurosport during the race. He will also be Portugal for the ELMS finale with the same car.

- Winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in LMGTE Am, Will Stevens once again took the wheel of the Ferrari 488 GTE entered by JMW Motorsport. When asked if he will be at Portimão, he responded: "Most likely, yes!" The British outfit is a contender for the title in LMGTE and Stevens with his 18 F1 Grand Prix (Manor Marussia) will be considerable. He will once again join Robert Smith and Jody Fannin.

2018:

- The 2018 European Le Mans Series calendar was released this past Saturday (read article), with continuity as key.

- The Cetilar Villorba Corse team intends once again to compete in the ELMS next year with its Dallara P217 and the same driver line-up (Roberto Lacorte, Giorgio Sernagiotto and Andrea Belicchi). Naturally, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is on the program, a race the Italian outfit participated in for the first time this year (eight in LMP2)! The same program goes for Racing Team Nederland (Dallara P217) and Jan Lammers and Frits Van Eerd who were joined at the 24 Hours of Le Mans by Rubens Barrichello.

Michelin Le Mans Cup:

- Fourth win of the season in the Michelin Le Mans Cup for the duo Alex Toril and Jean Glorieux with the DKR Engineering team's Norma M30. The victory earned the driver line-up and the Luxembourg-based team the Drivers and Teams titles. The car won Race 2 at Road to Le Mans, an event held as an opener to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

- The #7 Mercedes AMG GT3 driven by Lee Mowle and Dominik Baumann won the GT3 class and the two men have moved up in the standings, now only nine points separate them from the Ebimotors team's #46 Lamborghini driven by Emanuele Busnelli and Fabio Babini. It will all play out in Portugal.

- The 2018 Michelin Le Mans Cup calendar was also unveiled on Saturday. The two Road to Le Mans races, each 55 minutes long, will take place June 14th and 16th in 2018, still as a curtain-raiser for the 24 Hours of Le Mans (June 16-17).
