24 Hours of Le Mans - What's happening on Wednesday?

The serious stuff begins today, with some real action on and off the track. Read on to discover today’s busy agenda that includes the Women’s Pavilion, Virtual Room, concerts, all the attractions in the village and the Americans at Le Mans exhibition. On track, free practice for the upcoming 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Road to Le Mans race gets underway so we’ll be able to report the first lap times ahead of this weekend’s eagerly awaited events.

Pitwalk – 10:00-15:00

Fans with a “Pitwalk” ticket can come along and enjoy a peek into the garages to see what the teams are up to in the run-up to the race. The mechanics will be busy working on the cars to get them ready for free practice and the first qualifying session.

All the fun of the fair! 10:00-midnight

One of the most popular attractions for thrill seekers at the 24 Hours of Le Mans is the traditional funfair. The big wheel can be seen from all around the circuit and there are plenty of other rides, a shooting gallery, dodgems and all the usual stalls. Enjoy the typical funfair atmosphere (fair with the big wheel at the Ford Chicane and another near the Dunlop bridge) without having to leave the circuit!

24 Hours of Le Mans free practice – 16:00-20:00

Finally, some serious action! As the lap times achieved have no consequence on Saturday’s starting grid and newcomers were able to familiarise themselves with the circuit on Test Day, the teams use the practice session to tweak the cars' settings. Some of them focus on the race by completing long stints, while others keep their eye on the clock and opt for more aggressive setups. But they will all have to watch out for traffic on the track!

Women’s Pavilion opens – 16:00-midnight

The Women’s Pavilion was introduced at the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year and was a great success. It will open its doors again this Wednesday 15 June till the end of the race on Sunday. For its second year, the Pavilion is still reserved exclusively for women, celebrating the glamorous side of the race in a refined and modern setting. There is a relaxation area, an exhibition devoted to the motor car, plus various events and opportunities to talk to personalities linked to the race. The Pavilion is located in the heart of the village and has been completely redesigned. Its ambassadors this year are drivers’ wives Elysia Dumas-Morel and Gaëlle Duval Exposito, while Julia Baldanza, car collector, is guest of honour.

The Virtual Room opens – 16:00-midnight

The Virtual Room is all about innovation. You are invited to come and “Feel the experience” with an array of virtual reality technologies in place to attract young, connected racegoers and give them a fully-immersive race experience. One area is devoted to heritage and the technical advances made possible thanks to the legendary 24-hour race. Here, visitors will be able to have fun while they relive some of the greatest moments in the event’s history. In the gaming area, spectators can take to the driving seat as they try their hand at some of the latest sim racing games, with prizes up for grabs for the best! Elsewhere, fans will be able to sit in the bucket seat of an LM P1 prototype and put on a virtual reality headset for a thrilling ride around the full 13.629 km of the Circuit de la Sarthe, then head over to the selfie area for a photo to celebrate their win! The 2013 Audi R18 e-tron quattro will also be on display here. Don't miss the Virtual Room - a brand new attraction for this year!

Naked (in the sphere)  in concert – 20:00-21:00

Mag Jil, Etienne, Stef and Romain, better known as Naked (in the sphere) are a trip-hop/rock group from Le Mans. Their clever blend of words, melodies, guitar sounds and trip-hop beats are sure to get feet tapping. Their music is soothing yet powerful at the same time – get your hands on their latest album, Third Eye, to find out for yourself or come along and see them on stage!

Road to Le Mans free practice – 20:30-21 h 30

Back on the track, this evening sees the first official test sessions. Before the 60 teams entered in the 24 Hours of Le Mans come out, the 38 LM P3 and GT3 cars fielded in Road to Le Mans will be on track for a free practice session. The 55-minute race is scheduled for 11:10 on Saturday morning on Circuit de la Sarthe and will feature the ACO series (ELMS and Asian Le Mans Series) LM P3 prototypes and the GT3s that compete in the new Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup. The results will count in the Michelin GT3 Cup championship that is a curtain-raiser to five of the six ELMS rounds and at Le Mans this year. In addition to competitors from these series, a number of other LM P3s and GT3s have been invited to compete in Road to Le Mans. The race format requires one or two drivers and a mandatory pit stop. Two 60-minute practice sessions are planned: this one today and another on Thursday 16 June, from 14:30 to 15:30, then qualifying from 18:00 to 18:30.

Shake Shake Go in concert – 21:00-22:30

London-based Shake Shake Go features Poppy (singer-songwriter), Marc (guitar/composer), Virgile (guitar), Kilian (drums) and Toby (piano/bass). Their brand of airy pop music has been a big hit in the UK and Poppy’s voice is simply stunning. Their name came from a 6-year-old who was watching them busking in the streets of London when they first started out. And Shake Shake Go is really fitting for their uplifting, dream-inspiring style of music. In the UK, they have supported acts like Dan Croll, King Charles and James Blunt and have played at London’s Royal Albert Hall. They have also featured on the bill of a number of festivals in France and played at La Boule Noire in Paris last February. Shake Shake Go are now gearing up for a European tour.

24 Hours of Le Mans qualifying session – 22:00-midnight

This is the sporting highlight of the evening and we should get a few clues to how the grid will shape up on Saturday. The absolute priority: complete the five night-time laps that are mandatory for all drivers, including the most experienced, at one of the two qualifying sessions held from 10pm to midnight on Wednesday and Thursday. The second objective: achieve a decent qualifying time this evening in case the weather upsets things during tomorrow's session. The teams will then be able to concentrate of their final race preparations. We can therefore look forward to 120 minutes of intensive action!

Here are the four Corvette C7.R and C7. Z06 ready to fly the American flag for Chevrolet Corvette in the two GTE classes. This is the first time in 17 consecutive appearances that the American marque will be represented by four cars.
