24 Hours of Le Mans: Porsche, Oreca and Ferrari on top after free practice

The free practice session at the 84th edition has come to a close. The best time went to the #2 Porsche 919.

With a newly dry track the drivers were able to improve their times by the end of the session. Though at mid-session the #8 Audi held the best time, in the end the #2 Porsche driven by Neel Jani had the last word in 3:22:011. The second 919 came in second in 3:22:550. The #8 Audi R18 was third but Lucas di Grassi slowed after going off-track at the Forza Motorsport decelerator.

For Porsche, track conditions were favourable and the drivers will use qualifying to go after pole position. "Weather conditions are very tricky and it's really difficult because it is raining at certain portions of the circuit when others are dry. Weather permitting, we'll need to clock a time right at the start of qualifying," admitted Neel Jani, driver of the #2 Porsche and author of the best time at the 2015 free practice in 3:16:887.

In the LM P2 class, KCMG's #47 Oreca driven by Tsugio Matsuda, Matthew Howson and Richard Bradley clocked the best time in 3:39:721. Also noteworthy was the incident for RGR Sport by Morand's #43 Ligier coming out of the Indianapolis corner. Bruno Senna commited an error and caused a red flag for the second time. "We were in the middle of trying new settings and Bruno lost control of the car. It's not terribly serious, explained team manager Benoît Morand.

This free practice ended 15 minutes earlier than expected following a third red flag following two incidents at the same time. First the one concerning Pegasus Racing's #28 Morgan-Nissan driven by Inès Taittinger at the Karting turn. Then the second involving the #6 Toyota driven by Stéphane Sarrazin coming out of the Indianapolis corner. The French driver hit the safety rail but was able to restart the car on its own.

In LM GTE Pro, AF Corse's #51 Ferrari did better than the other F488 of Risi Competizione and the #68 Ford GT.

In LM GTE Am, Clearwater Racing's #61 Ferrari driven by Weng Sun Mok, Keita Sawa and Robert Bell clocked the best time in 3:57:543.
