24 Hours of Le Mans – Jackie Chan DC Racing: lights, camera, action!

For an international movie star like Jackie Chan, what could be more normal than digitally immortalising the highlights of his racing team in competition? This project for Jackie Chan DC Racing has been taken on by Virginie Dulauroy. The French videographer based in the U.S. has a vision as precise as it is original of how to go about filming the exploits of her clients on the track and in pit lane.

Virginie Dulauroy has one watchword: artistic. "The artistic element of my videos is asking myself what position to be in to get the best shot, and also working on blurriness. I am a huge fan of Clint Eastwood because he has a unique eye and a signature way of filming. Overall, I enjoy very artistic movies, meaning those whose aesthetic go beyond what is learned in film schools."

For a movie director as for a videographer, staging is essential: "During free practice sessions, I often walk the edge of the track to find spots I appreciate. I never take a shuttle. I even walked the entire length of the 24 Hours circuit last year to choose shooting locations. It allows me to find places one does not necessarily see, behind foliage for example.

For her shots, Dulauroy admits, "I run on instinct. I almost always film with a handheld and rarely use a tripod, monopod or stabilizer. It affords me greater mobility, like getting on the ground to film a tyre. It helps me find shot angles videographers who use tripods don't get."

In addition to Jackie Chan DC Racing - whose triumphant LMP2 one-two in 2017 she recorded - during this year's 24 Hours, Dulauroy has also worked with Matt McMurry, the youngest driver ever to take the start in the race at the age of 16 years and 202 days (in 2014), Risi Competizione, Proton Competition, Michael Shank Racing and Racing Team Nederland, as well as drivers Thomas Laurent, Gabriel Aubry, Memo Rojas, Michael Christensen, Julien Canal and Khaled Al Qubaisi) for videos destined for sponsors and social media. She approaches every project with the same dedication to art: "When I freeze an image in a video, I want to be able to say it would be a beautiful picture to frame."
