24 Hours of Le Mans - Hour 21 recap

Can an LMP2 win the the 24 Hours of Le Mans? Since the #1 Porsche 919 Hybrid retired, shortly before midday, it has been the question on everyone’s lips. As things stand, Tung/Laurent/Jarvis in Jackie Chan DC Racing’s Oreca 07 - Gibson are in the lead.

LMP1

In an unexpected turn of events at the 24 Hours of Le Mans: the five LMP1 prototypes fielded by Porsche and Toyota have either plummeted in the rankings or retired. With a comfortable lead, the #1 suddenly slowed and stopped on the Mulsanne Straight, the subsequent retirement causing bitter disappointment for driver André Lotterer.

With three hours to go, one Porsche and one Toyota remain, but neither is currently in a position to win. The top of the table is occupied by three LMP2 prototypes. An unforeseeable situation given that the ‘second class’ cars are a dozen seconds slower per lap. But thanks to the extraordinary reliability of the Oreca chassis coupled with the Gibson engine, the #38 Jackie Chan DC Racing is in the lead. The #13 Vaillante Rebellion and the #2 Porsche are not far behind. Providing it can maintain the pace without incident, the #2 Porsche could still win.

LMP2

One man’s misery being another man’s joy, the LMP2 camp is full of glee this morning. The #38 Jackie Chan DC Racing is first overall and has two laps in hand over the #13 Vaillante Rebellion and the #35 Alpine. The question now is, can Tung/Laurent/Jarvis hold off the #2 Porsche? We’ll soon find out!

One minute separates the top five cars in this class. For the moment, the order is Aston Martin, Corvette, Porsche, Ford, Ferrari. It will be a tight finish, that much is sure and the most shrewd fuel and tyre management will win the day. The last hour will be crucial. And it’s going to be hot again this afternoon!
