2016 Review - Switzerland beats the clock

2016 was another successful season for Swiss motorsport, with victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in the World Endurance Championship and the Asian Le Mans Series.

Neel Jani, first Le Mans, then the world - Following in the footsteps of fellow countrymen Marcel Fässler in 2012 and Sébastien Buemi in 2014, Neel Jani is the third Swiss driver to win the World Endurance Championship, a title he shares with teammates Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb. Just like Fässler, the first Swiss driver to win Le Mans 24 Hours, Jani went on to become world champion in the same season. Next year, Jani will join André Lotterer and Nick Tandy in a formidable line-up. All three are Le Mans winners. Sébastien Buemi has yet to win Le Mans but has his heart set on the trophy and will be making victory in the iconic race his next career goal.

Rebellion Racing, a new title and new chapter - Having dominated the LM P1 privateer class since the FIA WEC was instigated, Rebellion Racing is moving to the hotly contested LM P2 class in 2017. The Anglo-Swiss team leaves the class with an impressive record of 32 wins in 38 races. Good luck to whoever sets out to beat that!

Race Performance, the Asian challenge - A major player in the LM P2 class of the ELMS, the other Swiss team also has a faultless record: seven 24 Hours of Le Mans finishes in as many attempts. In the 2015-2016 Asian Le Mans Series, Race Performance won the team trophy and the crew, including Swiss Nicolas Leutwiler, took the drivers’ title. This season, having lost the first round in Zhuhau (China) to Jackie Chan DC Racing, Race Performance drivers Struan Moore, Giorgio Maggi and Fabien Schiller won the 4 Hours of Fuji (Japan) on 4 December.
