WEC - Review of the LMP2 standings after the 24 Hours of Le Mans

Who would have thought it before the start? But they pulled it off! Two LMP2 prototypes reached the second and third steps on the overall podium at the 85th edition of the 24 Hours...certainly a first at Le Mans.

After the disqualification of Vaillante Rebellion's #13 Oreca 07-Gibson for modifying the body of the car during the race, Chinese team Jackie Chan DC Racing did a flawless race and achieved a one-two in LMP2 and claimed the second and third steps on the overall podium. Already leader in the championship before Le Mans thanks to its win at the opening round at Silverstone, and its third place finish at Spa-Francorchamps, the "Mighty38" (Super 38) now has a 38-point lead on its closest rival, Vaillante Rebellion's #31 Oreca, in the Teams standings.

Signatech Alpine reached the provisional podium with the #36 Alpine A470, a derivation of an Oreca 07, leaving the glory on the class podium to its #35 sister car which, not having participated in the British round, finds itself in fifth place in the championship just behind Jackie Chan DC Racing's #37 Oreca (FortuneCat37).

The day's great disappointments were the #13 Vaillante Rebellion, obviously, with zero points after its disqualification, and G-Drive Racing's #26 Oreca following Roman Rusinov's contact with Proton Competition's Porsche LMGTE Am. The team that has scored all pole positions since the beginning of the season now holds the sixth spot in the championship and also must comply with a three-minute Stop and Go penalty at the 6 Hours of Nürburgring imposed by the Race Direction for the Russian driver's maneuver.

The Drivers standings echo those of the Teams, with the exception of Nicolas Lapierre, regular driver of the #36 Alpine, gone to join Toyota in LMP1 at the WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and the 24 Hours, replaced by Romain Dumas, two-time overall winner at Le Mans.

The 6 Hours of Nürburgring, the fourth round of the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC), will take place Sunday, July 16th.
