Tom Ferrier (Aston Martin): "I'd like to be doing Le Mans for the next 20 years."

Tom Ferrier, former BTCC (British Touring Car Championship) driver, is the owner of the TF Sport team (TF for his initials). The outfit won in the GT3 Le Mans Cup last year and therefore earned an automatic invitation to this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans (June 17-18). The team will be participating for the first time, and it is currently leading the LMGTE class in the ELMS with the driver line-up of Euan Hankey, Solih Yoluc and official Aston Martin Racing driver Nicki Thiim with an Aston Martin Vantage.

What is your relationship like with Aston Martin?

"I think we're a partner team now, one of the only teams left in fact that is running Aston Martins in GT3 so we get a lot of support from the factory in the ELMS, Blancpain (Endurance Series, Ed.), British GT. But it's a great product, we've won lots of things so we've always stayed with them (in LMGTE in the ELMS, Ed.)."

What are your thoughts on your start of the season?

"It has been brilliant, I mean obviously to win the first ELMS race (at Silverstone in the U.K., Ed.) was incredible and we had a really good weekend here with Blancpain where we won the Pro Am, so yeah it has been a very good start."

You are going to do the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a few weeks. Was that your main goal when you created the team in 2014, and what does the race mean to you, personally and for your team?

"Yes, when I myself was racing as a driver, I always wanted to do it and I never got to, so yeah for sure when you start a GT team, a sports car team, it's a pinnacle event. As a team I think it's a great achievement for us to be there in our fourth year as a team together. It's a huge achievement in that sense. As a person I'm very proud that everybody put the work in. Yeah it will be an interesting event for us. It's new to us but a lot of the staff, a lot of the guys have done it before anyway but for me it's my first time, two of the drivers it's their first time as well. This will be Rob Bell's ninth time so he brings a lot of experience which is good for the drivers."

How do you prepare for a race like the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

"Not long enough (laughs, Ed.)! We've got British GT the weekend before the tests (Test Day, June 4th, Ed.), Blancpain straight after, so...busy. We're running with Aston Martin Racing there so we're in the garage with them and it's a lot of help, it's a nice way to do it for our first time. I think we're all prepared, happy. We started preparing at the end of last year really when we knew we had an entry. Again, for my first time it's a learning experience, the whole thing, new problems come up that you have to solve all the time. There is a big learning curve, lots of paperwork, it's very different than any other event becasue of the size of the event. It's interesting."

In your first participation, what will be your objective in LMGTE Am?

"To finish is the first one. 100%. Anything beyond that I think is a bonus but I'm confident with the crew we have, the drivers we have, the product. You know I think we could have a good result on paper but there are obviously 24 hours to get through before that point. So yeah, to finish is the objective and we'll see after that."

You debuted in the GT3 Le Mans Cup with an Aston Martin Vantage, and now you're in the ELMS. What will TF Sport's next step be?

"We would love to do WEC at some point for sure because I fancy a holiday in Mexico (laughs, Ed.). And to keep going back to Le Mans, repeatedly, you know I'd like to be doing that for the next 20 years. It's the biggest race in the world isn't it? So to keep doing that every year would be fantastic. Obviously it changes every year. For the forseeable future I see myself with Aston Martin in GTE trying to be on the grid at Le Mans every year."
