The #5 Toyota's breakdown in the last lap explained

After having published an initial statement regarding the sudden loss of power experienced by Kazuki Nakajima (#5 Toyota TS050 Hybrid) in the last lap of the 84th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans as he was in the lead, Toyota has posted a new statement on the team's website.

"A technical default on an air line connector between the turbo and the cooler affected the #5 car, which caused turbo control loss. The team was finally able to modify the control parameters to get power back, which allowed the car to complete the final lap. Nonetheless, that took some time and the lap was not done within the six minutes required by the regulations."

"For now, we do not yet know what led to this breakdown though we have verified the fabrication process in our buildings in Cologne. Further analysis will be needed to determine the exact cause."

"What is clear, for the moment, is that there is no link between this breakdown and the engine problems encountered at Spa earlier in the season (the #5 finished in 29th place and the #6 was forced to retire following engine trouble, editor's note)."

"Further investigations are currently being conducted by TMG to determine the exact cause of the breakdown so as to reach solutions to make sure the problem does not happen again."

Remember that Kazuki Nakajima, who shared the #5 Toyota TS050 Hybrid with 2014 World Endurance Champions Sébastien Buemi and Anthony Davidson, had carved out enough of a lead on the #2 Porsche which ended up winning to reach the finish easily, but going into the last lap the car stopped on the pits straight. The Japanese driver was able to restart, but did not manage to complete the final lap quickly enough (the regulations stipulate the last lap must be wrapped up in less than six minutes) to be ranked, though it crossed the finish line in second place. The win disappeared along with precious points in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
