The 1956 Le Mans-winning Jaguar D-Type up for sale!

With its instantly recognisable outline and impressive racing pedigree, the Jaguar D-Type is a cult motor car. Especially in its Ecurie Ecosse guise.

Scottish team Ecurie Ecosse won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1956 with a Jaguar that became a cult symbol – the D-Type. The privateer team enjoyed strong backing from Jaguar, helping it to stave off the challenge from the Aston Martins and particularly the Aston Martin DB3S driven by Stirling Moss and Peter Collins. Two Scottish, Ron Flockhart and Ninian Sanderson, steered the Jaguar to victory in what was to be the second of three consecutive wins for the D-Type at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Since its 1956 triumph, this model – chassis number XKD 501 – has had three owners. It has been in the hands of its current custodian for 16 years. He has decided to put it up for auction at the Monterey, California, sale on 19–20 August, held to coincide with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elégance. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a fully functional Le Mans-winning car from this era in pristine condition.

Chassis no. XKD 501 was the first D-Type supplied by Jaguar to a privateer team. Delivered to Ecurie Ecosse on 5 May 1955, it was soon decorated in the team’s signature Scottish Flag Metallic Blue livery with the white St Andrew’s Cross on the front fenders. Following its 24 Hours of Le Mans success, the car went on to race at Goodwood, Aintree and the 1957 Mille Miglia.
