Tenth and Eleventh hours: Toyota, strength in numbers

The time lost by the #7 Audi and #1 Porsche has put the Toyota team in a position of strength with its two driver line-ups claiming a provisional podium finish in the race.

While it is still too early to make any predictions, the truth is things have never looked this good for Toyota. Though the Japanese outfit has gotten used to playing the underdog in previous years - when it entered two cars against its adversaries' three - the tide looks to have changed since the two TS050 Hybrids are still contenders for victory, against one Porsche and one Audi. The gaps remain miniscule and recent history at the 24 Hours of Le Mans has proven their is not always strength in numbers. In 2011, the only Audi to survive the start of the race triumphed over three Peugeots, for example.

The race is still for the taking in the other classes. In LM P2, the #46 Oreca of Thiriet by TSD Racing lost the lead after having to replace a control unit which immobilized it for more than three minutes, but it has managed to keep up with the #36 Alpine in the lead. On the other hand, KCMG's #47 Oreca has seem negatively affected ever since Richard Bradley stopped in the Porsche curve.

In the LM GTE Pro, Ford and Ferrari are hashing out a fantastic duel. The fight between the #82 and the #69 brings to mind the great era of the 1960s!

In LM GTE Am, the #88 Porsche of Abu Dhabi–Proton Racing is in the lead.

Note that the mechanics and drivers have shown stunning reliability with only two retirements (#47 and #89) despite the tricky conditions early in the race.
