Proton Competition (Porsche) driver line-ups all but finalized for the 24 Hours of Le Mans

On June 17th, as many as three cars in the LMGTE Am class will sport Proton Competition's colors though one the Porsche 911s is entered under the banner of Dempsey-Proton Racing. Of the nine drivers expected, only one remains unannounced.

Though the deadline to confirm driver line-ups is set by the 24 Hours of Le Mans regulations as May 11th, the Proton Competition team has yet to reveal the name of one of the nine drivers set to compete in the LMGTE Am class at the wheel of one of the three previous version Porsche 911 RSRs (cars in LMGTE Am must be at least one year old and the new Porsche 911 RSR was released this year by the German manufacturer).

The trio that typically competes in the World Endurance Championship (FIA WEC) with Dempsey-Proton Racing has not been changed for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The three men - Matteo Cairoli, Christian Ried and Marvin Dienst - who claimed the second step on the LMGTE Am podium at Spa-Francorchamps - will therefore be at the start.

The sporting regulations stipulate that in the LMGTE Am class a driver line-up must be composed of at least one Bronze driver and one Bronze or Silver driver (it is a class mainly reserved for amateurs), so only one Porsche driver, Patrick Long who reached the second step on the podium in 2015 along with Patrick Dempsey, will take the wheel of the #93 911 along with Abdulaziz Al Faisal (five participations in the 24 Hours) and Mike Hedlund who will debut after having taken part in Road to Le Mans last year.

Stéphane Lémeret and Nick Yelloly, both debuting at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, will be joined by a third driver in the #88 sister car. Though Wolf Henzler, factory Porsche driver with a class win in 2010, had been designated as the head driver when the invitees list was announced this past February, his presence at the 24 Hours has yet to be officially confirmed or denied. The answer to come with the release of the definitive list of 60 entries and 180 drivers!
