Previous 24 Hours of Le Mans winners at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring

This weekend will take place the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in which are participating several drivers who will take the start at the 84th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in three weeks, as well as four previous Le Mans winners.

Of the four drivers, only one has already won, in 2006, in the Eifel mountains: Mike Rockenfeller, victorious at Le Mans in 2010 with Audi. Loyal to Bentley, to whom he owes his win at Le Mans, Guy Smith will try for a first victory, as will Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy, winners at the 2015 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche 919 Hybrid along with Nico Hülkenberg.

The duo will reunite to seek the win in another 24-hour classic, knowing the Brit earned the overall trophy at Petit Le Mans last year in a GT with Patrick Pilet, one of his three teammates at the Nürburgring. The trio in the No. 911 Porsche 911 will be completed by Kévin Estre, and the sister No. 912 car will be driven by Richard Lietz, winner of the FIA Endurance GT Drivers Cup in the World Endurance Championship (WEC) last year, Jörg Bergmeister, Michael Christensen and Frédéric Makowiecki. The eight drivers will be at the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the three Porsches entered in the LM GTE Pro class.

In all, around 30 drivers will do both the 24 Hours of Nürburgring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year. Among the three record-holders in the German classic, only Pedro Lamy will have a chance to advance to six victories in an Aston Martin: Marcel Tiemann is no longer racing and Timo Bernhard, World Endurance Champion and Le Mans winner in 2010, will be absent. The Portuguese driver probably won't be matched as no drivers with four wins, including Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb, at the wheel of the No. 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid at Le Mans will be at the start this year.

The start of the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, with a Mercedes and a BMW on the first row, will be given Saturday, May 28th at 3:30 p.m. local time.
