Photo of the Day - Parachutists put on a show at the 1980 24 Hours of Le Mans

On October 22, 1797, André-Jacques Garnerin did his first parachute jump above the Parc Monceau in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. On June 14, 1980, continuing a tradition started the year before, parachutists landed in the middle of the starting straight at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Unlike André-Jacques Garnerin, who tied a parachute to the basket of a hot air balloon and popped the balloon once he reached an altitude of 700 meters (his wife achieved the same feat two years later), the parachutists at Le Mans jumped out of a plane!
