The distance record at the 24 Hours is the most coveted of all records at Le Mans. To achieve a flawless race with zero missteps is the ultimate dream of every competing team. Entrants have continued to push themselves throughout the years in their attempts to complete the symbolic number of 400 laps.

<h2>Lots of&nbsp;Luck Required</h2>

In the&nbsp;1920s, shortly after the inception of the race, competitors weren&#39;t known to&nbsp;boast&nbsp;about&nbsp;lap speed or lack of mechanical troubles. Marketing campaigns focused on distance travelled or laps completed. Le&nbsp;Mans offered the perfect opportunity to set the distance&nbsp;record over&nbsp;24 hours.

The number of laps&nbsp;depends of the configuration of&nbsp;the circuit of course. The longer that is, the lower the total number of laps at the same hourly average, which is&nbsp;why it is customary to use the latter measurement rather than a fixed number. The symbolic number of 400 laps has never been reached in 92 runnings of the 24 Hours.

<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/going-all-out-the-insane-pursuit-of-the-track-record-at-le-mans-58456" target="_blank">To do so would nearly take a miracle</a>. Everything would have&nbsp;to fall into place perfectly. In addition to factors like&nbsp;the regulations&nbsp;(which at times have&nbsp;limited fuel consumption, car speed, aerodynamics, etc.), the track itself would need to be ideal&nbsp;for 24 hours with minimal safety car deployments and the absence of any&nbsp;mechanical problems. Mother Nature also plays a major role as it would be impossible to achieve the record in disruptive&nbsp;weather.

<h2>Staggering Progress</h2>

<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/todays-photo-story-michelin-wins-the-1923-24-hours-of-le-mans-with-chenard-walcker-45115" target="_blank">During the first running in 1923</a>, for&nbsp;example, nothing went right. There were consistent downpours, the regulations in no way encouraged participants to go full throttle, the track was littered with pebbles and the cars weren&#39;t up to the task. The #9&nbsp;Chenard &amp; Walcker Sport distance record-holder, and therefore the favourite in the eyes of the&nbsp;public, completed&nbsp;128 laps in 24 hours. Nine years later, the winning Alfa Romeo 8C covered&nbsp;200. The circuit was quite&nbsp;different indeed, but the distance remained&nbsp;correlated to the number of laps.

Remarkable progress was made at the 24 Hours of Le&nbsp;Mans in the early years&nbsp;relative to tyres, car reliability, the <a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/why-is-the-24-hours-of-le-mans-run-on-public-roads-58347" target="_blank">state of the track</a>&nbsp;and everything that follows. In 1939, the winning&nbsp;Bugatti Type 57G completed&nbsp;248 laps (1,145 km more than the Chenard &amp; Walcker).

The&nbsp;300-lap benchmark was next on the agenda. In 1953, Jaguar shocked opponents by equipping its&nbsp;Type C with disc brakes, the first in the history of motorsport. The change made all the difference. Since then, only one winning car has travelled&nbsp;less than 300 laps in 24 hours:. incessant rain and several surprise twists in 1995 led&nbsp;to the<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/masanori-sekiya-the-first-japanese-winner-of-the-24-hours-of-le-mans-58259" target="_blank"> surprise victory&nbsp;of a McLaren F1 GTR after&nbsp;298 laps</a>.

<h2>So Close, Yet So Far</h2>

When&nbsp;Ford set out to win Le&nbsp;Mans against&nbsp;Ferrari in the 1960s, it pulled out all the stops. In pursuit of that goal, the American carmaker&nbsp;produced&nbsp;the iconic&nbsp;high-performance GT40. In 1967, Dan Gurney and&nbsp;A.J. Foyt won the 24 Hours in 388 laps, i.e.&nbsp;5,000 km, a first at the race.

Over the years and various incarnations of the circuit, a few competitors have come close to reaching the 400-lap mark. The installation of chicanes in the Mulsanne Straight in 1990 slowed the cars, but not the progress: of the 13 runnings with more than&nbsp;380 laps, nine date back less than 18 years.

In 1968 when new regulations were&nbsp;established, the record seemed safe for awhile. But the <a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/why-is-the-porsche-917-such-a-motorsport-icon-58241" target="_blank">arrival of the iconic&nbsp;Porsche 917 in 1969</a> changed everything. That&nbsp;exceptional prototype, as intimidating&nbsp;as it was fast, soon set a new track record and, in 1971, a new distance record.&nbsp;Helmut Marko and&nbsp;Gijs van Lennep completed&nbsp;397 laps&nbsp;of the&nbsp;circuit&nbsp;(5,335 km) at the wheel of their&nbsp;917 K, short&nbsp;just&nbsp;40 km from reaching&nbsp;400 laps, but at that insane pace, their achievement was still mind-blowing.

<h2>Nonstop&nbsp;Innovation</h2>

It&#39;s always the same story: the circuit undergoes major modifications, as it did&nbsp;in 1972, but the cars come back even stronger than before. The&nbsp;Group&nbsp;Cs in the early 1980s challenged every bar previously set. In 1988, the&nbsp;Jaguar XJR-9 LM driven by&nbsp;Johnny Dumfries/Jan Lammers/Andy Wallace covered&nbsp;394 laps in&nbsp;24 hours. One year later, the&nbsp;Sauber-Mercedes C9 did&nbsp;389. Then the&nbsp;chicanes were added, throwing another wrench in the hunt for the distance record.

But once again, the level of innovation rose to the occasion. The extremely well-designed Audi R8 threw its hat in the ring, and its successor, the&nbsp;R10 TDI, became the first diesel to claim the top step on the podium, in&nbsp;2006. The car reached 380 laps for the first time since&nbsp;1989. The increase&nbsp;in power of LMP1s with roaring engines came full circle&nbsp;in 2010 with the victory of the Audi R15&nbsp;TDI shared by&nbsp;Timo Bernhard/Romain Dumas/Mike Rockenfeller.

The trio achieved&nbsp;397 laps and a&nbsp;distance record of&nbsp;5,410.7 km. It was a stunning feat, enough to reach&nbsp;400 laps at the 1971 configuration of the&nbsp;circuit. After first appearing in 2012, hybrid&nbsp;prototypes routinely surpassed&nbsp;380 laps, but the&nbsp;record remained in place&nbsp;14 years later. Others came close: from&nbsp;2018 to&nbsp;2020, the winning&nbsp;Toyota never fell below&nbsp;385 laps in 24 hours, a real coup&nbsp;given the number of major incidents the&nbsp;team endured.

Meanwhile, in 2015, Porsche was a top contender for the record. The German marque&#39;s three&nbsp;919 Hybrids stood an excellent&nbsp;chance despite intense competition. Nico H&uuml;lkenberg/Earl Bamber/Nick Tandy crossed the finish line after&nbsp;395 laps without making a single mistake.

The&nbsp;Hypercar era that got underway&nbsp;in&nbsp;2021 is in its infancy, so it&#39;s no surprise&nbsp;the distance covered at Le Mans has shortened&nbsp;since the creation of&nbsp;the&nbsp;category, as is almost always the case following the introduction of new regulations.&nbsp;Last year, the&nbsp;Ferrari 499P of&nbsp;James Calado/Antonio Giovinazzi/Alessandro Pier Guidi covered&nbsp;342 laps during a particularly challenging running of the race due to highly unpredictable&nbsp;weather conditions.

So, is&nbsp;the&nbsp;record even achievable? It wasn&#39;t that long ago the two-hour mark was considered unreachable&nbsp;by marathon runners, but is now a common&nbsp;goal for&nbsp;high-level runners.&nbsp;In the same vein, it was most likely thought in 1923 that&nbsp;covering 4,000 km during the 24 Hours was unthinkable. The technical evolution, the ACO&#39;s relentless pursuit of&nbsp;innovation and driver talent level are breathtaking. The legendary 100-year&nbsp;history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans has proven one thing to the world: engineers do not know&nbsp;the meaning of the&nbsp;word impossible.

Will anyone ever reach 400 laps at the 24 Hours of Le Mans?

Hans Herrmann is a bona fide legend whose legacy is ripe with jaw-dropping achievements and phenomenal stories. His career is so accomplished it can be difficult to grasp in its full magnitude. At 96 years young, Herrmann is just as passionate as ever, clearly immune to the ravages of time.

<h2>Racing Over Baking</h2>

Industrial activity and the lives of millions of people were heavily&nbsp;impacted at the height of WWII in Stuttgart, Germany. In the city, a humble apprentice pastry chef worked to perfect&nbsp;his skills with any&nbsp;means available. Hans Herrmann, born in 1928, preferred baking to war, shutting out the surrounding chaos by daydreaming of&nbsp;himself of&nbsp;racing cars. With no&nbsp;flour, eggs or&nbsp;other essential ingredients to be had, he&nbsp;had plenty of&nbsp;time to adore&nbsp;his childhood heroes,&nbsp;Rudolf Caracciola and Bernd Rosemeyer, two German icons in whose footsteps he would love to follow.

Herrmann&#39;s mother understood his passion and decided to help him&nbsp;follow his dream in 1951 by selling the gold bracelet his father had given her before he was killed in 1936. The money should be enough for her son to buy a car. Herrmann had already been racing for some time, but only with a poorly performing car shared with several other young hopefuls. He and his&nbsp;newly acquired Porsche 356 1100cc became&nbsp;inseparable.

Herrmann made his first appearance in&nbsp;a circuit race in 1952. His raw talent&nbsp;quickly drew attention and&nbsp;little by little he made a name for himself in his home country. Thanks to&nbsp;a stunning performance at a&nbsp;rain-soaked&nbsp;N&uuml;rburgring, he got noticed by&nbsp;Porsche. The German carmaker immediately&nbsp;recruited him for&nbsp;the 1953 24 Hours of Le&nbsp;Mans. At that time, Porsche was not yet the behemoth we know today. The marque had only been founded in 1948 and competing in the 24 Hours since&nbsp;1951, with no wins yet on the books. But, it did have an extremely well-performing&nbsp;550 Coup&eacute;. The only two cars entered snatched the top two spots in the Sport 1.5 L category, and with his career only just beginning, Herrmann was already in the&nbsp;points.

<h2>Head Down!</h2>

Though Herrmann was failing to&nbsp;win the most&nbsp;prestigious European races of the season, he continued to impress. During the 1954&nbsp;Mille Miglia, the famous&nbsp;endurance road race in Italy, disaster almost struck. When he arrived&nbsp;in the village of Chieti in&nbsp;his Porsche 550 Spyder, he came upon a blind corner followed by&nbsp;a set of&nbsp;gates in the process of closing. With the marshal&nbsp;not in the right place to warn him, Herrmann had no choice but to put the pedal to the metal, and with his free hand&nbsp;push down&nbsp;the head of his co-driver,&nbsp;Herbert Linge, and lower his own. The car made it under&nbsp;the gates. Herrmann could never master the Mille Miglia. The 1955 running, where he failed to win&nbsp;in&nbsp;the final moments, remains his greatest career regret. He then retried his chances at Le Mans with a&nbsp;Porsche 550 RS 1500 along with&nbsp;Helmut Polensky, but their headlights failed them on Sunday morning.

Mercedes-Benz, the other major carmaker in&nbsp;Stuttgart, hired Herrmann for&nbsp;Formula&nbsp;1 to join&nbsp;the great Juan Manuel Fangio. Unfortunately, the marque abruptly withdrew from all competition in 1955 following the infamous and&nbsp;devastating accident at Le&nbsp;Mans. Luckily, <a href="https://www.porsche.com/usa/?referrer_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.porsche.com%2Ffrance%2F" target="_blank">Porsche</a>&nbsp;was waiting in the wings.

Herrmann never failed to show up at the 24 Hours for his team, though without much success. In 1956, he shared the wheel of a 550 A with Umberto Maglioli, but a piston cut their race short in the&nbsp;16th&nbsp;hour. One year later, he tried his hand again with Richard von Frankenberg with a&nbsp;550 A RS. As it had in 1955, the car&#39;s lighting dashed all hope after eight hours of racing.

<h2>Back to the Grind</h2>

Herrmann hoped to return to Formula 1, but was unable to secure&nbsp;a seat. Porsche still trusted&nbsp;him in endurance racing, and&nbsp;in 1958, he&nbsp;achieved a positive result at the&nbsp;24 Hours. At the wheel of a&nbsp;718 RSK, he and&nbsp;Jean Behra claimed the third&nbsp;step on the overall podium and won the&nbsp;Sport 2.0 L category. Both performed flawlessly&nbsp;in the rain, despite ongoing brake troubles.&nbsp;Herrmann was less fortunate in&nbsp;1959, still with a&nbsp;718 RSK and&nbsp;Maglioli, he was once again forced to retire (engine failure).

His single-seater career wasn&#39;t taking&nbsp;off. However,&nbsp;he had continued to&nbsp;work&nbsp;with various teams since 1957,&nbsp;sometimes at the wheel of a Maserati for Scuderia Centro Sud, or&nbsp;with&nbsp;a Cooper-Maserati or for&nbsp;BRM. It was with the latter that Herrmann earned his nickname. During the 1959 German F1 Grand Prix with an&nbsp;AVUS near Berlin, he experienced the worst thing a racing driver can: brake failure. The circuit had just&nbsp;two corners&nbsp;linked&nbsp;by two long straights. Arriving near one of these sizable&nbsp;hairpins, his car began to flip.

Miraculously, Herrmann was ejected directly to the ground. Stunned&nbsp;but unhurt,&nbsp;he watched&nbsp;his BRM P25 disintegrate&nbsp;just a few meters away. Everyone began calling him&nbsp;Hans im Gl&uuml;ck (Hans in Luck), the original&nbsp;title of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale.

His loyal&nbsp;backer, Porsche, then called upon Herrmann for its Formula 1&nbsp;programme, but he took the start in only one&nbsp;Grand Prix in 1960 in addition to his participation in endurance racing&nbsp;classics. Besides competing in the&nbsp;24 Hours&nbsp;(retirement due to engine failure), he won the&nbsp;12 Hours of&nbsp;Sebring&nbsp;with Olivier Gendebien. He also triumphed at the&nbsp;Targa Florio, another Italian road race, and in 1961, finished seventh at Le Mans with&nbsp;Edgar Barth. As Herrmann was then&nbsp;already 33 years old, Porsche felt it had better chances in F1 with Dan Gurney and&nbsp;Jo Bonnier. His dreams of&nbsp;Grand&nbsp;Prix were over. Still representing&nbsp;Porsche, he finished seventh at&nbsp;the 1962 24 Hours&nbsp;again with Barth. And then he left.

<h2>Second Career</h2>

Herrmann packed his bags and joined&nbsp;Abarth, a renowned Italian constructor-preparer, who needed&nbsp;a professional driver to assist with development. Porsche had ended its Formula 1&nbsp;programme at the end of the season. Herrmann&#39;s calendar consisted&nbsp;of hill races and&nbsp;more modest events. Though he was&nbsp;sometimes disconcerted by less disciplined methods than those to which he had been accustomed (for example, at one event his mechanics had forgotten to fill his car with petrol), he did have some success. As a result of his new schedule, the German driver was absent from Le Mans for several years.

The seasons passed and weariness set in. A turning point came in 1965 when his team&#39;s car once again failed him. At the end of the year, Herrmann&nbsp;returned to his home country, ready to reclaim his destiny and be nearer to his son&nbsp;Dino. Porsche called upon him as it had in the good old days. His&nbsp;preparation for the 1966&nbsp;24 Hours was no walk in the park as&nbsp;prototypes had greatly evolved in the interim. He shared the wheel of a&nbsp;906/6 LH with&nbsp;Herbert Linge, once again taking on the biggest&nbsp;endurance race in the world. The duo finished an impressive fifth overall and second in its category.

Victory at Le Mans felt attainable for Porsche. In 1967, Herrmann and Swiss driver Jo Siffert took the start with&nbsp;the&nbsp;sharper&nbsp;907. Another fifth place only spurred the team on. The&nbsp;1968 season kicked off promisingly with wins at the Rolex 24 at&nbsp;Daytona and 12 Hours of&nbsp;Sebring. At Le&nbsp;Mans, however, the&nbsp;908 suffered a defective clutch before nightfall.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/why-is-the-porsche-917-such-a-motorsport-icon-58241" target="_blank">With the arrival of the formidable&nbsp;917</a> the following year, the race was all but promised to&nbsp;Porsche.

<h2>Turning the Frown Upside Down</h2>

Herrmann was not entrusted with&nbsp;the new&nbsp;917 as it was&nbsp;terribly feared by its drivers and&nbsp;even more so&nbsp;by their opponents. Hans im Gl&uuml;ck and&nbsp;G&eacute;rard Larrousse drove a long version&nbsp;908 to improve its top speed. The 1969 24 Hours is known as a legendary running of the race.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/24-hours-of-le-mans-ickx-marches-to-victory-at-the-1969-edition-52596" target="_blank">The walking start by&nbsp;Jacky Ickx</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;death of&nbsp;John Woolfe paved the way for an epic battle between the #6&nbsp;Ford GT40 of&nbsp;Ickx/Oliver and the #64&nbsp;908 of&nbsp;Herrmann/Larrousse. In the final lap, Ickx managed to keep the German driver and his Porsche at bay, beating him by only&nbsp;120 metres. Undoubtedly, Herrmann&#39;s&nbsp;mind was flooded with what-ifs, like the crippling loss of 20 minutes at the start&nbsp;for a suspension repair. He had been so close&nbsp;to the win.

In 1970, Herrmann&#39;s wife&nbsp;Magdalena asked him to hang up his helmet for good, and he promised her he would after the 24 Hours of Le&nbsp;Mans. In the meantime, he had worked to refine the 917 and make it more reliable.&nbsp;For that running, he was head driver in a short version&nbsp;917 K entered by the official team of the&nbsp;Pi&euml;ch family &ndash; extremely important figures in the German marque&#39;s history&nbsp;&ndash; under the name Porsche KG Salzburg. He was out to win after a decidedly challenging&nbsp;race week.

The car only qualified in P16 and, even worse, teammate&nbsp;Richard Attwood had the mumps! In&nbsp;endless downpours over&nbsp;Le Mans, the duo kept a patient pace, and won with a five-lap lead.&nbsp;After all of the blood, sweat and tears, Herrmann had given Porsche its first win at the 24 Hours!&nbsp;He then honoured his promise to his wife and retired on the spot.

The extraordinary nature of Herrmann&#39;s life didn&#39;t stop there. In the early&nbsp;1990s, he was kidnapped by three masked men and freed upon payment of a one&nbsp;million&nbsp;Deutsche Mark ranson.&nbsp;His greatest victory was not the one celebrated on 14 June&nbsp;1970 at Le Mans, but having survived his career (as indicated by the title of his autobiography). He had suffered the loss of several friends in serious&nbsp;accidents, but himself&nbsp;was able to stand&nbsp;tall, like the hero he had always dreamed of being.

The spell-binding story of Hans Herrmann

The European Le Mans Series deeply regrets to have to report that on Tuesday 9 April 2024 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya during the 4 Hours of Barcelona event an incident occurred in the Michelin Le Mans Cup paddock.

In the morning during set up, Gerhard Freundorfer, Team Manager of Proton Huber Competition, was involved in a fatal accident with his team truck. He was quickly attended by the circuit medical staff but, unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.&nbsp;

Fr&eacute;d&eacute;ric Lequien, CEO of Le Mans Endurance Management: &ldquo;On behalf of the whole endurance family I would like to extend all of our deepest condolences to the family of Gerhard Freundorfer, especially to his wife Karola, and the Proton Huber Competition team. This is a very sad day for the endurance family.&rdquo;

Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l&rsquo;Ouest (ACO): &ldquo;This morning we woke to the news of the death of Gerhard Freundorfer, which has saddened everyone involved in endurance racing. Gerhard was a member of the endurance family, and he will be sadly missed by all. I wish to extend the condolences of everyone at the ACO to Gerhard&rsquo;s family and friends.&rdquo;

One of the world’s most respected motorsport writers, and a doyen of the sportscar paddocks across six decades, Michael Cotton, has died at the age of 86.

Cotton was a trained journalist, who followed his father in to the profession in the early 1960s. H held several editor roles, notably at Motorsport News and Motor Sport magazine, where he ran the weekly paper for several years from 1968.

Cotton became close to several legendary drivers, notably Perdo Rodriguez, Jo Siffert, Vic Elford and Brian Redman. He was respected enormously for his writing, covering the legendary years of Porsche v Ferrari in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Cotton then became press manager of Porsche Cars GB in 1976, a role that Cotton loved as he had a close affinity and colossal respect for all things Porsche. He went on to write several books on the marque including the brilliant Porsche 917 book published by Kimberley.

At the advent of the Group C era in the early 1980s Cotton went back to his roots as an independent reporter where he contributed to countless publications, including Motor Sport again and Motorsport News.

He covered the golden years of Group C forensically and again published several books on one of sportscars greatest eras.

Mike went on covering the sport well in to his seventies and made sporadic appearances in press rooms until recently. His son, Andrew Cotton, continued the family vocation and has been the long-time editor of Racecar Engineering, and is also a highly respected writer within motorsport, particularly endurance racing.

The ACO&nbsp;sends its condolences to the entire Cotton family and all of Mike&rsquo;s many friends and former colleagues in the paddocks of the world.

For more than a century, an endless string of legendary drivers has proudly represented two of the top countries in the world of auto racing, France and the UK. The 24 Hours of Le Mans, a true reflection of automotive sporting trends and innovation, has witnessed brilliant performances by both French and British competitors throughout its history. After 100 years and 91 runnings, the two nations are still fighting for ultimate bragging rights at the race.

<h2>Crazy Stat</h2>

Initially, the&nbsp;24 Hours of Le&nbsp;Mans was envisioned to test the reliability of road&nbsp;cars destined for the average driver. But, the race very quickly evolved into a competition reserved for increasingly finessed cars, essentially prototypes. The founders never considered it a playing field for drivers, that was the domain of&nbsp;Grand&nbsp;Prix, the predecessor of&nbsp;Formula 1. Even fans were more interested in the carmakers than the men entrusted to earn&nbsp;wins.&nbsp;The individual influence of great&nbsp;champions was diminished by the nature of endurance racing as a team sport.

None of the above has prevented certain drivers from achieving sensational exploits at the race. The nine victories of&nbsp;Tom Kristensen, the five&nbsp;poles of&nbsp;Jacky Ickx or&nbsp;<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/going-all-out-the-insane-pursuit-of-the-track-record-at-le-mans-58456" target="_blank">Kamui Koyayashi&#39;s lap&nbsp;record</a>, for example,&nbsp;are remarkable evidence of individual triumphs. There are others, lesser known perhaps, but just as impressive.

What is the probability that after a century of racing, two countries have managed to produce &ndash; almost &ndash; the same number of winning drivers?&nbsp;Ahead of the&nbsp;2024 24 Hours, France counts&nbsp;29 and the UK&nbsp;34. It&#39;s an astonishing stat given that drivers of&nbsp;19 different nationalities have won the race.&nbsp;Another major auto racing country, Germany, boasts&nbsp;18 winners, Italy and the US, 12.&nbsp;

<h2>The Brits Make Themselves at Home</h2>

France has the home playing field advantage. Naturally, the French race attracted local constructors, particularly during the&nbsp;1920s and&nbsp;1930s, and of course&nbsp;they tended to recruit French drivers. But,&nbsp;why are the Brits so successful at Le Mans?

The UK has always had its fair share of reputable&nbsp;marques ready to compete at the 24 Hours:&nbsp;a private Bentley paved the way at the inaugural running&nbsp;in&nbsp;1923,&nbsp;clinching&nbsp;the&nbsp;win the following year. The British carmaker then spent considerable resources to remain a major contender, already recognised as one of the most&nbsp;important races in the world just a few years after its inception. The&nbsp;Bentley Boys era drew a large number of Brits to the&nbsp;circuit, warmly welcomed by&nbsp;the race director at the time, Charles Faroux, who understood the growth potential of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Thanks to&nbsp;successful results achieved by&nbsp;Bentley, Aston Martin and&nbsp;Lagonda in the various categories, British fans have established&nbsp;an extremely strong presence&nbsp;at the race, and continue to brighten the grandstands and campgrounds as&nbsp;the majority contingent of foreign spectators.

<h2>A Century-Long Duel</h2>

In the early years, the Brits and French held the monopoly on the top step of&nbsp;the&nbsp;podium. It would take until 1932 and&nbsp;Luigi Chinetti for a winner to emerge from outside the two countries, and even then Chinetti had served as a mechanic in Paris shortly before his victory. The&nbsp;domination of the&nbsp;Bentley Boys between&nbsp;1927 and&nbsp;1930 gave the Brits the upperhand thanks to big names like&nbsp;Woolf Barnato, Henry Birkin and&nbsp;Earl Howe. Their&nbsp;French rivals included the winners of the first running, Andr&eacute; Lagache and&nbsp;Ren&eacute; L&eacute;onard, and other legends like&nbsp;Robert Bloch, Raymond Sommer and&nbsp;G&eacute;rard de Courcelles.

From 1923 to&nbsp;1939, before a nine-year hiatus due to&nbsp;World War II, at least one French and one British driver were members of each&nbsp;winning crew. The trend continued after the race resumed in 1949, but by then more drivers of other nationalities were arriving&nbsp;on the scene. The 1952&nbsp;24 Hours was won by two Germans with&nbsp;Mercedes-Benz and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/ferrari-vs-jaguar-when-titans-square-up-58405" target="_blank">Jos&eacute; Froil&aacute;n Gonz&aacute;lez became the first&nbsp;Argentinian to triumph, in 1954</a>. The Belgians and Americans followed, then drivers from&nbsp;countries like Mexico and Austria.

Over time, the&nbsp;dynamics shifted. French drivers won sporadically, sometimes with the&nbsp;Scuderia Ferrari (who did not hire drivers based on nationality) and other times with marques from their home country. The win scored by&nbsp;Jean Rondeau and&nbsp;Jean-Pierre Jaussaud at the 1980&nbsp;24 Hours was the last for an all-French driver line-up to date. The UK&nbsp;saw a decline in domination for the most part, with the exception of&nbsp;Jaguar&#39;s presence in the&nbsp;1950s: the Brits&nbsp;won three consecutive runnings from&nbsp;1955 to&nbsp;1957.

<h2>A New Era</h2>

Little by little, fan loyalty based on specific driver nationality began to fade. We cheered on Derek Bell because he&#39;s&nbsp;Derek Bell, not because he&#39;s British. But often&nbsp;each marque makes the effort&nbsp;in its top crews&nbsp;to keep a driver of the same nationality so&nbsp;the impact will be maximised&nbsp;in the event of victory.

Examples:&nbsp;in 1992 and 1993, at least one French driver&nbsp;was recruited for&nbsp;each Peugeot 905. En 1999, BMW and&nbsp;Mercedes-Benz followed suit with Germans. Between&nbsp;2018 and&nbsp;2022, at least one Japanese driver contributed to&nbsp;Toyota wins, whether that be Kazuki Nakajima, Kamui Kobayashi or&nbsp;Ryō Hirakawa. The practice isn&#39;t systematic, but remains&nbsp;frequent.

In more recent times, contender status for British and French&nbsp;marques has been a rarer phenomenon, and the same can be said for drivers from both&nbsp;countries. The last Frenchman to win the 24 Hours was Romain Dumas in&nbsp;2016, and the last two Brits were&nbsp;Mike Conway with&nbsp;Toyota in 2021 and&nbsp;James Calado with&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fiawec.com/en/team/6293" target="_blank">Ferrari</a>&nbsp;in 2023. The&nbsp;duel remains eminently tight, and this year&#39;s running could completely disrupt the status quo, especially as&nbsp;the&nbsp;Hypercar category is stocked with top&nbsp;talent from both&nbsp;camps.

<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/2024-entry-list" target="_blank">Crews&nbsp;at the 2024 24 Hours</a>&nbsp;are set&nbsp;to include several&nbsp;French and British drivers, 12 for the former&nbsp;and eight for the latter&nbsp;(so far, as not all have been finalised). Traditions die hard: Herz Team JOTA, British runner of the&nbsp;Porsche 963, has opted for as many as four&nbsp;Brits for two cars, among them 2009 F1 world champion&nbsp;Jenson Button.&nbsp;Alpine has recruited four&nbsp;French drivers for its two A424s.

If the nationality of Le Mans winners may seem anecdotal at first glance, the&nbsp;re-emergence, quantity and sudden occurrence at certain moments in history are indicators of the cultural, political and sporting dynamics of their respective countries.&nbsp;With that understanding, the race makes it possible to gain a little more insight into&nbsp;the past and present, if not the future, of our world.

The TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, part of the 2024 FIA World Endurance Championship, will be hosting the Forum H2, gathering together European voices currently promoting hydrogen

A Hydrogen VET&nbsp;Forum will be organized within the framework of the European Skills Agenda&nbsp;by&nbsp;the&nbsp;Automotive Skills Alliance, GreenSkillsforH2 and Skills Alliance for Industrial Symbiosis,&nbsp;European initiatives and projects dedicated to the development of skills needed to deliver on the EU&#39;s ambition to transition to a climate neutral economy by 2050, in collaboration with the Automobile Club de l&#39;Ouest.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Hydrogen VET&nbsp;Forum will be held as part of the FIA 2024 World Endurance Championship, during the TotalEnergies 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps, on an emblematic track for MissionH24 which did its first official laps there in 2018.&nbsp;

Aimed at teachers, the event will provide an overview on the latest developments in hydrogen technology and strengthen hydrogen education in Europe. The event will also&nbsp;include workshops with hydrogen experts from the world of motor racing, including those from MissionH24, a program run in collaboration with the ACO and H24Project. It represents, once again, the formidable role of Endurance racing as a technological laboratory. Hydrogen forum at the TotalEnergies 6 hours of Spa-Francorchamps

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a full day of battling the weather, mechanical setbacks and other competitors. Given the scale of the race, securing pole position to start a few meters ahead of one's opponents seems relatively insignificant. Yet, throughout the years, some have specifically focused their expertise to do just that.

<h2>In Numerical Order</h2>

The hunt for pole position, in other words&nbsp;the track record, took quite a long time to gain steam at Le Mans. Prior to&nbsp;1963, the starting order was determined by engine capacity. The cars&nbsp;with the biggest engines, assigned the lowest racing numbers, took the top spots on the grid. This descending order was respected so the least powerful competitors&nbsp;did not hinder contenders&nbsp;from the start.

The practices were primarily used to test, without necessarily seeking to push to the cars to their limit.&nbsp;Between&nbsp;1923 and&nbsp;1939, the in-race lap&nbsp;record was a main focal point for&nbsp;competitors and the press. Even that was&nbsp;often eclipsed by the distance traveled in 24 hours, proudly cited by manufacturers in their marketing campaigns. At the time, the ACO was more interested in testing the endurance of the cars rather than their intrinsic speed.

<h2>It Takes More Than Just Horsepower</h2>

It takes three crucial parameters to clock&nbsp;a record-breaking lap. Firstly, favourable regulations that allow cars&nbsp;to harness&nbsp;their full power. That was not always&nbsp;the case, as the ACO prioritised other objectives like&nbsp;reducing costs or lowering consumption,&nbsp;which&nbsp;generally slowed down cutting-edge cars. Secondly, an optimal configuration of the&nbsp;circuit was needed. In 1923, the track was long and littered with gravel,&nbsp;and finally covered&nbsp;with asphalt in&nbsp;1939. <a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/why-is-the-24-hours-of-le-mans-run-on-public-roads-58347" target="_blank">Paving advancements made by the ACO</a>&nbsp;allowed a shocking improvement on the lap record during that period.

Last but not least: tyres, the component that plays the biggest role in performance. The pressure and&nbsp;composition&nbsp;can cause&nbsp;the best prototypes to gain or lose whole seconds on a lap. The early&nbsp;history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans saw the quickest progress in the three parameters. The best in-race lap went from nearly&nbsp;10 minutes in 1923 covering&nbsp;17.262 km, to&nbsp;05:12 in 1939 covering&nbsp;13.492 km.

<h2>All for the Glory</h2>

In 1963, the race began a new chapter. From then on, the timesheet&nbsp;determined&nbsp;starting grid order. Achieving the best time became a top&nbsp;priority, not necessarily to improve&nbsp;one&#39;s chances for the race, but to fire a warning shot to rivals, and for the prestige and proof of mastery of the circuit. Mexican driver&nbsp;Pedro Rodr&iacute;guez became the first pole-sitter at the&nbsp;24 Hours with a time of&nbsp;03:50.90 (an average&nbsp;of 209.873 kph per lap). Naturally, the circuit changed a great deal over time thereafter which is why it is important to compare average speed rather than time clocked.

Every year, the greatest drivers&nbsp;were sent to do everything in their power to beat the&nbsp;current record, including&nbsp;Bruce McLaren,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/who-was-phil-hill-the-legend-who-shunned-the-spotlight-58307" target="_blank">Phil Hill</a>, John Surtees and other major Formula 1 players and world champions. Many achieved excellent laps, some legendary. Generally speaking, a lap in less than&nbsp;03:15 is not only remarkable, it&#39;s outstanding. The time represents an average speed of approximately&nbsp;250 kph&nbsp;maintained across&nbsp;13 km.

<h2>The Lightning-Fast 917</h2>

The arrival of the Porsche 917 at the end of the&nbsp;1960s caused quite a sensation. Super&nbsp;fast, aerodynamic&nbsp;and lightweight, the German sport prototype allowed drivers to reach new heights in racing and&nbsp;top&nbsp;the qualifying timesheets between&nbsp;1969 and 1971. During the 1971 session, seasoned pro Rodr&iacute;guez clocked a time of&nbsp;03:13.900&nbsp;(at an average 250.069 kph) at the wheel of the #18&nbsp;917 LH&nbsp;<a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/why-is-the-porsche-917-such-a-motorsport-icon-58241" target="_blank">&quot;longtail,&quot; even quicker&nbsp;and more finessed&nbsp;than its&nbsp;shorter counterpart</a>. He reached a staggering 390 kph in the Mulsanne Straight. Ironically, the #21 Porsche 917 LH driven&nbsp;by G&eacute;rard Larrousse and Vic Elford was timed at 03:14.900&nbsp;which would have put it in pole position for every running of the&nbsp;24 Hours&nbsp;except three.

<h2>STUCK Improves, PORSCHE Celebrates</h2>

In the early&nbsp;1980s, Porsche&nbsp;introduced yet another extremely fast car, the&nbsp;956, entrusted&nbsp;to the legendary Jacky Ickx (pole record-holder at five). In 1983, he achieved a lap at an average of 249.560 kph. A time like his,&nbsp;03.16.56,&nbsp;had not been clocked&nbsp;since the glory days of the&nbsp;917. Two years later, the entry of the 962C by the official&nbsp;Porsche team&nbsp;opened the door for a new record, but in a surprise twist, the Belgian driver failed to&nbsp;secure the top spot&nbsp;during&nbsp;qualifying. That accomplishment&nbsp;went to&nbsp;Hans-Joachim Stuck. At the wheel of the #2&nbsp;Porsche, he wowed the crowd with an astonishing lap time of&nbsp;03:14.80. Taking into account&nbsp;the&nbsp;configuration of the circuit at the time, he drove at an average of 251.815 kph, faster than Jackie Oliver had 14 years earlier.

<h2>KOBAYASHI and the Perfect Lap</h2>

Stuck&#39;s record was immortalised after&nbsp;the installation of two chicanes in the Mulsanne Straight in 1990. In the following years, the 3.5-litre&nbsp;Group C cars, similar to Formula 1s, would have&nbsp;their say. In fact, in 1989&nbsp;Jean-Louis Schlesser came close to 03:15.00 with his Sauber-Mercedes C9.

Then, slowly but surely,&nbsp;faster prototypes came on the scene. The LMP1 hybrid cars arrived In the late&nbsp;2010s, and&nbsp;at the wheel of a&nbsp;<a href="https://toyotagazooracing.com/" target="_blank">Toyota</a>&nbsp;TS050 Hybrid in 2017,&nbsp;Kamui Kobayashi stunned everyone during&nbsp;qualifying with a time of&nbsp;03:14.791 (an average&nbsp;251.882 kph). His performance, seen via on-board camera, was nothing short of magical.

It was unanimously decided that given the average speed, Kobayashi had just delivered the fastest lap in the history of the 24 Hours. But, he was having none of that, <a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/24-hours-of-le-mans-what-s-the-secret-to-a-perfect-lap-56375" target="_blank">insisting&nbsp;he could do better</a>. The Japanese driver is very hard on himself,&nbsp;undoubtedly the secret to clinching&nbsp;four poles at Le Mans, second best after Ickx.

Since&nbsp;2020, eligible 24 Hours competitors take part in the <a href="https://www.24h-lemans.com/en/news/24-hours-of-le-mans-hyperpole-explained-56325" target="_blank">intense&nbsp;Hyperpole</a>. In the Hypercar era, the effort to reduce lap times continues, fuelled&nbsp;by the search for synergy between man and machine.&nbsp;It&#39;s an almost poetic show&nbsp;that continues to thrill fans some&nbsp;60 years after its initial&nbsp;introduction.
