Gorgeous images from the 24-hour sailing regatta in Brittany

Endurance racing, passion and self-fulfilment are not only a matter for cars and bikes, as we saw at the 44th annual 24-hour sailing regatta in Brittany last weekend! Read on to learn more about this inspiring event.

You are obviously familiar with the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the world’s greatest endurance race. And you are no doubt aware that the Automobile Club de l’Ouest organises other twice-round-the-clock marathons with the 24-hour motorcycle race, the 24-hour truck race and the 24-hour go-karting event. But have you ever heard of the 24-hour sailing regatta, a seagoing equivalent of the 24 Hours of Le Mans held in Coz-Pors bay at Trégastel in Brittany? “The 24-hour sailing race is a relay with two crews taking turns in each boat and a minimum number of four stints. Only 420-class yachts (compliant with class association rules) are allowed to race. The winning boat is the one to have completed the highest number of laps, but there are other, less serious rankings too, such as the youngest or the funniest crew!” the organisers explain.

Congratulations to Baptiste Layus, Marïwenn Riou, Goulwen Souetre and Marie Layus who won last weekend’s event, held under glorious sunny skies with light winds.

On the subject of  24-hour races, remember that the 24-hour go-karting event will take place on 17-18 September. Full details (in French) on: http://www.24h-karting.com. Then it will be the turn of the trucks, with their own 24-hour race on 8-9 October 2016. For further details (in French) and booking: http://www.24h-camions.com
