24 Hours of Le Mans drivers at the 24 Hours of Spa

Every year at the end of July, many Le Mans drivers also take part in another endurance racing classic, the 24 Hours of Spa.

It rained for the practice sessions and looks set to be wet all day Friday, but drivers should haver a dry track for the race itself. However, 1998 Le Mans 24 Hours winner Stéphane Ortelli probably wouldn’t mind racing on a damp circuit for that’s how he won the Belgian race in 2003, with two recent Le Mans winners, Romain Dumas and Marc Lieb. As for Guy Smith, he won Le Mans in 2003 and will be at the wheel of a Bentley this weekend.

Several class winners are also on the grid of the race that dates back to 1924. Among them, Olivier Beretta and Oliver Gavin, who will be swapping his usual Corvette for a Lamborghini. The two former Corvette Racing teammates will be among friends as there are seven other drivers who have won classes at Le Mans: Pierre Kaffer, Bertrand Baguette, Karim Ojjeh, Tom Kimber-Smith, Giancarlo Fisichella, Darren Turner and Nicolas Lapierre, winner of LM P2 for the past two years.

From the prototypes to the GT classes, in all, over twenty of the drivers on the Spa grid this weekend were at Le Mans 24 Hours this year. Here’s another chance to see the likes of Daytona and Spa winner Pipo Derani at the wheel of a prototype and Patrick Pilet and Kévin Estre in their GTs.

The 24 Hours of Spa starts at 16:30 on Saturday 30 July.
