2016 Review - Porsche: 2016 a success, now on to 2017

The 2016 season gave Porsche its 18th win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and a second set of titles (drivers and teams) in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). Meanwhile, the German manufacturer has also been preparing for the future with the new version of its 911 RSR, set to make its debut in the LM GTE Pro class in 2017.

LM P1: two new titles for the 919 Hybrid - This final result was a combination of consistency for 2016 World Champions Romain Dumas-Neel Jani-Marc Lieb, and veritable fireworks for 2015 World Champions Timo Bernhard-Brendon Hartley-Mark Webber. With four wins, the latter trio is, like in 2015, the winningest LM P1 driver line-up in the World Endurance Championship (WEC). But a very difficult early season prevented the trio from retaining the world title, won instead by teammates. As Bernhard-Webber-Hartley left Le Mans with a goose egg, Dumas, Jani and Lieb racked up the 50 points earned for a win at the 24 Hours. It was a significant difference felt heavily at the Bahrain closing round of the 2016 season. Since its first appearance in 2014, to-date the Porsche 919 Hybrid has competed in 25 races, winning 13 as well as four world titles (two drivers, two manufacturers).

LM GTE: transitional season for the 911 RSR - In 2016, the official team of Olaf Manthey, winner of the FIA Endurance GT Drivers and Manufacturers Cup, did not defend its double title. But Porsche worked behind the scenes to optimize the new version of the 911 RSR while the Dempsey-Proton Racing team competed in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), with as best result a fourth place finish in the LM GTE Pro class at the WEC 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps. It was in LM GTE Am that the strengths of the inimitable 911 found their home, with two wins for Abu Dhabi Proton Racing. The Manthey team will be back in LM GTE Pro in 2017, and great battles are expected with the Ferrari 488 GTE and the Ford GT, the two newest stars in the class.
