Not to be missed : Pontlieue reborn!

In the first 24 Hours of Le Mans,  in 1923, the circuit extended into the southern suburbs of Le Mans, up as far as the famous Pontlieue hairpin. The ambiance of this legendary corner will be recreated tonight at 20:00.

With the creation of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1923, the circuit was the same one used two years earlier for the GP of the ACF.( Automobile Club de France) It measured over 17 km and even extended into the city of Le Mans! The famous hairpin at Pontlieue was very popular with spectators because it was a spectacular braking zone – cars slithered almost to a halt before setting off along the 8 km long original version of the Mulsanne straight!

Considered too dangerous, the hairpin was shortened from 1929 onwards and the layout was changed again in 1932 with the creation of the Tertre Rouge corner. Although it had a relatively short existence, Pontlieue left an indelible mark on the history of the race.

In partnership with the City of Le Mans, the site of the hairpin will be restored to its 1923 appearance with billboards, barriers, and a café that still exists, it will have a real 1920s makeover. Vintage vehicles will follow a mini-course through this legendary place. A period character bar will be restored in the courtyard of the adjoining school, with dance, music, and costumes. The inauguration will take place at 8pm in the presence of Jean-Claude Boulard (Mayor of Le Mans) and Pierre Fillon (President of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest). The evening will be open to the public and this unique reconstruction will be visible throughout the week of the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2013.
