24 Hours of Le Mans in 1991 - The surprise Mazda victory (video)

The spectators of the 59th edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans were far from suspecting they were about to witness a historic event when the 46 cars took the start! Yet the next day, the No. 55 Mazda of Volker Weidler, Johnny Herbert and Bertrand Gachot achieved the first and only victory by a Japanese automaker in La Sarthe.

That 22nd of June in 1991, the Peugeot 905 cars were the favorites, but they quickly experienced mechanical problems that would relegate them to the depths of the rankings, paving the way for Sauber, but after the No. 1 Sauber-Mercedes retired, Mazda took the lead and never relinquished it. This coming June 14th and 15th, Toyota will try once again to clinch the victory the Japanese automaker has been chasing for many years (ticket information).
