Work in progress on the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit

Every year, the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit undergoes maintenance. This year, the focus is on further improving the safety of the 180 drivers who will take to the track in June.

At the the Automobile Club de l’Ouest press conference in February, president Pierre Fillon announced that all four new pits would be open for use this year and not just two. The four garages have already been built and work should be completed by the end of March.

The Porsche Curves section has been widened. The SAFER (Steel and Foam Energy Reduction) barriers funded by the Syndicat Mixte du Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans (a consortium of local and regional authorities) are now being installed and will be ready by mid April.

April will be a busy month at the circuit as shock absorbing piles of tyres will also be placed at strategic spots around the track.

At the same time, the Sarthe council (Conseil Général) is installing a roundabout on the public road at Arnage corner, but of course, that will not affect the circuit layout. A larger gravel trap will be in place on the same corner to provide extra safety for this year’s race. The spectator area will also be slightly altered. All work is scheduled to be completed by early May, a month before the Test Day on 5 June. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is on the weekend of 18-19 June.
